VIDEO: 10 VINTAGE CARS AUCTIONED FOR INSANE PRICES

This is extraordinary. There's no doubt that very rare classic cars are often worth their weight in gold, especially when they have a rich history that people find interesting but, and it's a big but, the cars on this list seem to be worth many times more than that to the people who purchased them.

It's astounding that any one of these vehicles was auctioned off for more money than most people will make in their lifetime. And we're not kidding here. A little bit of research on the magical interweb puts an estimated earnings for the average American's lifetime at between two and 10 million dollars, depending on various factors obviously.

So, with that being said, it'll only take two lifetimes for a slightly higher than average Joe, who doesn't spend a cent (ever!), to afford the cheapest car on this list, namely a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider. And, just to turn the knife even more, it was sold in the condition it was found in – covered in dust, dented and withering away in a barn – for $18 500 000.

Most of the cars on this list are one of a very small number to leave the factory. For instance, the 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/CC Speciale which was one of only three ever produced, or the gorgeous 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider of which only 8 were ever produced.

Then, there are those that have claimed various race wins in their time with famous drivers behind the wheel. Let's take the 1955 Jaguar D-Type which was victorious in the 1956 24-hours of Le Mans, it also has the title of most expensive British car ever sold at auction. Then there's the most expensive Aston Martin to be sold, that would be the 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 which won at the Nurburgring 1000 with Sir Stirling Moss at the wheel.

Another famous racer was the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196, driven by 'The Master' Juan Manuel Fangio, was auctioned as authentic, including battle wounds from its years of racing, for $29 600 000.

And to top it all off? Another simply gorgeous Ferrari. This time, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, the holy grail for Ferrari collectors. Its price? A whopping $38 115 000!

So, if you are ever fortunate enough to see any of these cars in the flesh, just remember to not touch anything as it'll take lifetimes of blood, sweat and tears to pay it off if you break anything.
