The 30th of December 2017 turned out to be a sad day in Tokyo as Tatsuro Toyoda, Toyota's former president, passed away after suffering pneumonia.

Toyoda has been involved in the company from 1984 and even set up the joint venture between Toyota and General Motors which became New United Motor Manufacturing. After stepping down as president in 1995, he pursued other roles within the company including adviser, following in his father's footsteps, Kiichiro Toyoda, who founded Toyota. This 88-year-old Toyota legend has been the epitome of a successful businessman who created a kingdom out of a small company.

A ceremony was held for the family by his wife, Ayako Toyoda but a more public ceremony is still to be held. His instrumental work in Toyota led to people talking about him as a "pioneer in international collaborations in the industry".

The burning question is "who will be the next leader of the Toyota generation now that it is not in the hands of the Toyoda family?"
