Mercedes Benz has been the latest automotive manufacturer to announce its withdrawal of exports to Russia and local manufacturing after its biggest rivals, BMW and Volkswagen.
Over a week of devastation has passed already in Ukraine after Russia decided to invade. Alongside many casualties, fleeing civilians and bomb blasts, many international companies, organisations and businesses are withdrawing from Russia with immediate effect until further notice.
The automotive industry is no different.
Just a few days ago, both BMW and Volkswagen announced that they will be immediately halting exports to Russia until further notice.
Yesterday, Wednesday the 3rd of March 2022, Mercedes Benz took exactly the same approach and had this to say on their Twitter account:
"Mercedes-Benz will suspend the export of passenger cars and vans to Russia as well as the local manufacturing in Russia until further notice."
Unlike BMW and Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz is one of the top-selling cars in Russia by both the government and local market as well. Mercedes Benz pulling out of Russia, for the time being, is without a doubt going to hurt the Russian economy not only by sales and profits but rather the thousands of Russian jobs the German automotive brand has given to the Russian economy.
When will Mercedes Benz, BMW and Volkswagen open up to Russia again? This is still a complete unknown in the sense that it is uncertain when and how this current conflict between Ukraine and Russia will end. Both Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz and BMW have made their decision to pause export and local manufacturing in and to Russia for the time being, but there is no clear indication as to when this trade will commence yet again.
