PORSCHE LIKED ROMANIA’S LEGENDARY TRANSFăGăRășAN HIGHWAY SO MUCH THEY CREATED A LIMITED NUMBER 911 FOR IT
Porsche has just delivered something truly special - the first of only ten 911 Carrera 4 GTS “Tribute to Transfăgărășan” models. It’s a handcrafted Sonderwunsch creation that celebrates both 50 years of the iconic mountain pass and half a century of the equally legendary 911 Turbo. The Transfăgărășan Highway is a 90-kilometre stretch of pure driving heaven, carving across Romania’s Făgăraş mountains with endless hairpins and elevation changes. Known as the “road that touches the clouds,” it’s long been considered one of the world’s greatest pieces of tarmac. When the road’s 50th anniversary lined up with the 911 Turbo’s golden jubilee in 2024, Porsche clubs from Romania and Moldova staged a massive celebration with over 100 cars. For Porsche itself, the inspiration sparked something even more exclusive: a tailor-made tribute car series limited to just ten units. The very first has now been delivered - fittingly - to its Romanian owner, who collected the car with a drive on the Transfăgărășan itself.
This debut build wears a Graphite Grey Paint to Sample finish, contrasted with Guards Red detailing on the wheels and headlight rings. Subtle “Tribute to Transfăgărășan” decals mark the doors, while the B-pillars carry a badge identifying it as one of the rare 10. At the rear, the grille slats are finished in blue, yellow, and red - a nod to the Romanian flag. Inside, the bespoke detailing continues. “Tribute to Transfăgărășan” is illuminated on the sill guards, stitched into the headrests, embossed on the centre armrest, and carried across the dash. It’s unmistakably a one-off, dripping with personalisation while proudly honouring its inspiration.
Each of the 10 cars shares the flag accents and commemorative badging, but every customer configured their car uniquely through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch programme. Paint, leather, trim, and accessories were all tailored to individual taste, meaning no two cars are alike. The nine remaining cars will be handed over later this year at a Porsche-hosted event. Underneath the bespoke touches, this 911 Carrera 4 GTS packs Porsche’s new T-Hybrid powertrain. A 3.6-litre twin-turbo flat-six pairs with hybrid tech for 398 kW and 610 Nm, launching the coupe from 0-100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds. Top speed is a healthy and rather rapid 312 km/h. It’s a setup honed with motorsport know-how - lighter than plug-in hybrids, cleaner than its predecessors, and with only a modest 50 kg gain in weight compared to the standard GTS.
As Alexander Fabig, Vice President of Individualisation & Classic at Porsche, put it: “We decided to not only create one but 10 individualised cars that pay tribute to one of the most legendary and inspiring parts of Romania.”
For locals, it’s more than just a nod. As Adrian Pascu from Porsche Inter Auto Romania added: “The Transfăgărășan is well-known by car enthusiasts all over the world for its magnificent landscapes and its hairpin turns. I look forward to seeing these exceptional cars being driven on the very road they are honouring.”
With this, Porsche’s Sonderwunsch programme has done what it does best: transform a sports car into a rolling piece of art that’s equal parts performance weapon, national tribute, and personal time capsule. Only ten will ever exist, but all of them will forever be tied to one of the greatest driving roads in the world.
