TOYOTA DROPS A BANGING MOTORSPORT-BRED AERO PERFORMANCE PACKAGE FOR THE GR YARIS - BUT IT’S JDM-ONLY
When Toyota unveiled the GR Yaris back in 2020, nobody quite expected it to become the modern cult car that it is now. Well, some Toyota execs must have been secretly hoping, we’re almost positive of that. The GR Yaris was born out of rallying rather than bean counters; it was a rare case of a major manufacturer throwing the rulebook aside and building something for the purists. With a turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder, manual gearbox, all-wheel drive, and a chassis sharpened by the same team that runs Toyota’s WRC cars, the GR Yaris instantly became one of the most talked-about performance cars of the decade. Enthusiasts from the UK to Australia, South Africa to the U.S. (where they can only look on enviously, since it’s not sold there) have been clamouring for one, and many who managed to get their hands on the little hot hatch have gone wild with tuning and track mods. It’s a car that sells out faster than Toyota can build it, and even in stock form, it’s widely regarded as a future classic. So when Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) announces an Aero Performance Package developed with input from professional drivers and tested in real motorsport series like Super Taikyu and the Japanese Rally Championship, the global fanbase leans in closer. And then the kicker drops: it’s JDM-only. Yep, the rest of the world gets to look, not touch. Available on the RZ “High performance” and RC trim levels from October 1, 2025, the Aero Performance Package is a six-piece kit designed to push cooling, stability, and aerodynamics to the next level. Each part comes with racing DNA and the fingerprints of pro drivers who pushed the GR Yaris to its limits.
Here’s what Toyota’s cooking up:
Ducted aluminium hood
Straight from lessons in the Japanese Rally Championship, the vented hood pulls hot air out of the engine bay. It mimics the carbon-fibre unit used on the ultra-rare GRMN Yaris and is designed for endurance at high-speed flogging.
Front lip spoiler
Initially not part of the package, but added after pro driver feedback, this piece reduces front lift and sharpens aero balance. In simple terms: more bite on turn-in, more stability everywhere else.
Fender ducts
These extract trapped air from the front wheel arches, reducing turbulence and improving steering feel when the nose dives under hard braking or when you’re muscling into a corner.
Fuel tank undercover
Inspired by the flat safety tanks in Toyota’s Super Taikyu race cars, it smooths airflow under the car and trims drag.
Variable rear wing
A proper motorsport-style, adjustable rear wing. It keeps the GR Yaris planted at high speed, tames the “snake” movement under heavy braking, and can be tweaked for different track conditions.
Rear bumper ducts
Developed after race bumpers literally tore off under extreme loads in competition, these ducts reduce drag by cutting the “parachute effect” that builds up behind the car.
Toyota makes it clear that this isn’t some sticker pack or cosmetic trim. Every component was born out of racing, refined through countless laps, and tested in some of the harshest conditions Japanese motorsport can throw at a car. It’s about taking the GR Yaris - already one of the sharpest driver’s cars on sale - and making it even more of a weapon.
And that’s why the JDM-only tag stings. From the UK to Scandinavia, fans run GR Yaris owners’ clubs and track-day groups. In Australia, dealers had waiting lists before the car even landed. In South Africa, they’ve been snapped up by tuners who are chasing big power and big boost from that tiny three-cylinder. Even in the U.S., where it isn’t officially sold, grey imports and GR Corolla comparisons keep the hype alive.
