ONE OF THE COOLEST RELEASES UNDER THE LEGO ICONS BANNER IS THE MCLAREN MP4/4 F1 CAR - COMPLETE WITH A MINI AYRTON SENNA.

Ayrton Senna is widely regarded as one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time, for many reasons. The man had an astounding career in the sport of Formula One, starting with his debut with the Toleman in 1984. Despite driving a relatively uncompetitive car, he showcased his exceptional talent with impressive performances, including a second-place finish in a rain-soaked Monaco Grand Prix. In 1985 he moved to Lotus where he clinched his first Formula One victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix. Continuing to showcase his skills, Senna earned a few more pole positions and race wins over the next two seasons with the team, but it was in 1988 when he moved to McLaren that his career became legendary. It was with McLaren in 1988 that he won his first Driver’s World Championship, and he went on to do the same in 1990 and 1991. Senna's aggressive driving style and exceptional qualifying performances became legendary, earning him widespread respect. He left the team in 1994 to join the Williams team and was on track to do even more amazing things in his career. Sadly Senna was killed in an accident at the San Marino Grand Prix. Throughout his F1 career, Senna amassed 41 race victories, 65 pole positions, and three World Championships. While all of it was impressive, it was that 1988 season in the McLaren MP4/4 that helped with the man’s legendary status. At the hands of Senna, the MP4/4 won 15 out of 16 races, losing only the Monza Grand Prix after he collected backmarker Jean-Louis Schlesser's Williams-Judd in the first chicane. This amazing record was only really matched in 2023 when Max Verstappen won 19 of 22 races. A few other drivers won 15 races in a season over the years, but the most impressive season was definitely 2023. That 1988 season cemented the McLaren MP4/4 as one of the most dominant Formula One cars in the history of the sport.

The MP4/4 actually was driven by two legendary drivers, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost who had a bitter rivalry, even as teammates. The MP4/4 was powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged V6 Honda RA168E powerplant, which was one of the most powerful engines of the time. The car featured advanced aerodynamics including a low-line chassis, side-mounted radiators, front and rear wings optimized for high downforce and minimal drag as well as a revolutionary semi-automatic gearbox. The MP4/4 is often cited as one of the greatest F1 cars of all time thanks to its overwhelming success and technological advancements and it remains a symbol of McLaren's excellence and innovation in motorsport, an era they surely wish to match in these modern times. Seeing as the car is from 1988, we’re almost positive that the people interested in buying this awesome new LEGO kit released under the Icons banner will be over 40. The kit is made up of 693 pieces and has some pretty accurate detailing that includes working steering, rod suspension and adjustable rear wing. To make the kit even more attractive to potential buyers, it includes an Ayrton Senna mini figurine as well as a separate display stand with an Ayrton Senna quote and photo as well as an information plaque with interesting statistics printed on it. The kit is on sale now and it’s listed at local LEGO retailer Great Yellow Brick for R1,499.00. That’s a decent price for something that will look perfect on display in many different rooms, from the lounge to the bar to the man cave. Just thinking about it now, we’re sure that at least 10 people in our friend's circle will have one of these displayed the next time we visit, and it’s also managed to get itself a placing on our must-have list of goodies.
