THE “ELECTROMOD” JEEP® CJ SURGE WILL DEBUT AT SEMA, INDICATES FUTURE OF OFF-ROADING.

In a year of anniversaries, US aftermarket giant Mopar turns 85 years old and that means the outfit has been supplying genuine parts and accessories to keep the aftermarket wants and needs of fans of the brands they associate with inside the group of companies. Mopar does release some cool things during the year but all the best stuff sees the light of day when the annual SEMA shows comes around. Justy an FYI, Mopar is the combination of the words MOtor and PARts - simple and effective.  For this 2022 instalment the component manufacturer has three models to show off, the first we take a look at has been dubbed the Electromod Jeep CJ Surge. The point of this concept build is to show how electrification of powertrains can be a positive thing for vehicles that will likely spend a lot of their time off the beaten track.

The CJ Surge concept is a legit 4x4 Jeep, the main change is to the powertrain that now features a scalable 400-volt, 200-kW Electric Drive Module that mounts to the frame with custom-designed solid motor mounts. 24 lithium-ion battery power runs through a two-speed Jeep transfer case with selectable gearing. The concept Jeep rolls on 35-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tyres mounted on 18-inch Black Rhino wheels, a 2-inch lift kit and features bespoke changes like the Copper Canyon/gloss black paint with contrasting Surf Blue Surge graphics and striping. The oversized fender flares are great, and purposeful. Front and rear Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) Dana 44 Crate axles help the CJ Surge concept easily crawl over rocks and boulders. There’s a JPP Wrangler JK Rubicon Bumper Kit with a JPP Rubicon Warn winch up front and dual Surf Blue tow hooks and amber LED fog lamps. Underbody protection features JPP Rubicon skid and front-bumper plates with concept JPP rock rails. The custom BEV charge port is located just behind the driver-side door opening.

“With a spotlight on electrification, Mopar is in a great position to fully enhance the customer experience with quality-tested, factory-backed parts and accessories,” said Mark Bosanac, North America senior vice president, Mopar service, parts and customer care. “The Jeep CJ Surge concept explores a future zero-emission propulsion system kit and supports the Jeep brand’s mission to become the leading electrified SUV brand in the world. Separately, our Ram 1500 Backcountry X and TRX Gold Shot concepts showcase a truckload of innovative Mopar accessories for our award-winning full-size trucks.”

Inside there’s a pair of race-style seats that feature Surf Blue stitching on the black Sedoso cloth with houndstooth fabric inserts, there’s a Wrangler JK centre console that features a rotary shift knob, Mopar instrument-panel gauges (include a charge indicator to show battery life), a custom-built roll cage, and all weather floor mats. A custom-shaped bikini top provides cover from the elements. There’s also a custom steering wheel that features a unique JPP horn pad badge.
