BEFORE THE ICONIC CLK DTM AMG THERE WAS THE P900 PROTOTYPE - AND ITS FOR SALE!

At the turn of the millennium, AMG, the high-performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, was firing on all cylinders, creating some of the most powerful and exclusive vehicles of the era. The likes of the CL, SL, and S 65 AMG, alongside the SL and E 55 AMG, had already cemented Affalterbach's reputation as a powerhouse of engineering excellence. But in 2003, the CLK DTM AMG was unveiled, taking exclusivity and performance to unprecedented levels. This road-going marvel was born from AMG-Mercedes' utter dominance in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), where they clinched nine out of ten victories and a drivers' championship with Bernd Schneider behind the wheel. We’ve driven with Schneider around Kyalami racetrack in an AMG GT2 Pro and while the car was mind-blowing, we’re pretty sure he would have clinched those titles no matter what kind of car you put him in. The man is a legend for a reason. To commemorate this success, AMG meticulously developed the CLK DTM AMG, subjecting it to over 30,000 km of rigorous testing by official AMG drivers on both road and track. The result was a car destined to become a collector's dream. We’ve also been lucky enough to drive in one of these, and it was one of those forever memories. The car was brought into SA for AMG fanatic Jamie Vilela who actually raced the car in a few time attack-style events before time attack was even a thing. The maddest part is that Jamie is a paraplegic and the car was converted to be operated by hands only. With just 100 coupe units and 80 convertibles produced, the CLK DTM AMG was already rare. Yet, even rarer is the CLK DTM AMG P900—a machine so unique that only two were ever built, blending the performance of a race car with the precision and craftsmanship AMG’s VIP clientele demanded.

While the standard CLK DTM AMG featured a supercharged 5.5-litre V8 producing 428 kW and 800 Nm of torque, the P900 took a different path. It was the first AMG model to debut the naturally aspirated M156 V8 engine—a 6.3-litre aluminium masterpiece weighing just 199 kg. This engine, a nod to the legendary M100 of the 300 SEL 6.3, produced 375 kW and 630 Nm, delivering ferocious power with incredible refinement. The P900’s design was unmistakably influenced by its racing roots, with standout features like carbon-fibre doors, Lexan windows, a rear spoiler, and ventilated front wings. Its interior was equally race-focused, boasting fire-resistant bucket seats, harnesses, a full roll cage, and a bespoke digital display. Originally built on a CLK 500 Avantgarde platform, the P900 was a technological showcase, bridging the gap between road car and DTM race car. One of the two P900s remains with AMG USA, while this example found its way into the hands of a discerning Mercedes collector. Having spent most of its life as a cherished part of his collection, this unique prototype is now available for the first time. While theoretically road-legal with pre-race trim COC documents, it would require modifications for registration. A true one-of-a-kind piece of AMG history, the P900 stands as a testament to the brand’s racing heritage, driven by legends like Jean Alesi and Bernd Schneider, and is now ready to claim its place in a new chapter of automotive history under new ownership thanks to this exclusive Bonhams auction. It will likely go to a serious Mercedes-Benz fanatic because estimates are that the car will fetch between R12,000,000 and R15,000,000.

Take a look at the YouTube video that's a rare find, almost as rare as the 1 of 2 P900 itself. Take a look at this thing and let us know if you think it's worth that R15 mil it could fetch: CLK DTM AMG Coupe P900 C209 the very rare and fast supercar by AMG | OldBenz
