EVER WONDERED HOW THE NEW EV-ASSISTED LAMBORGHINI REVUELTO STACKS UP AGAINST THE ICE-POWERED AVENTADOR SVJ? US TOO.

When Lamborghini’s Aventador debuted in 2011, the aggressive and angular styling was something different in the supercar where most automakers were making smooth, flowing lines. The Aventador was futuristic-looking, featured full carbon fibre monocoque and made use of new materials and technologies that saw Lamborghini as the leader in the field. The Aventador is also the model that the banshee-like screaming V12 powerplant was specifically created for. The very first LP 700-4 was named after the power output and the output drive, so the 700 was for the horsepower (515 kW) and the 4 meant it was an all-wheel drive underneath. The 6.5-litre V12 tipped the scales at 235 kg, produced 700 hp with 690 Nm of torque and it could propel the Aventador to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds. Over the years there have been no less than nine variants of the Aventador, with a further nine low-volume special editions and another seven that make use of the underpinnings and powerplant. The Aventador SVJ (Super Veloce Jota) model features that same V12, but in this guise, it’s rated at 770 hp (566 kW) with 720 Nm of torque. The whole package weighs in at 1,700 kg and when it’s given full beans, it can hit 100 km/h in 2.98 seconds and it can cross the 350 km/h mark on a longer stretch of road. When it was new, the SVJ was listed at £360,000, which in today’s money and exchange rate is around R8,500,000. When fans of the brand, especially those who will never actually buy a Lamborghini, found out that the latest offering from the Italian automaker would feature a hybrid-electric powerplant, they lost their collective minds. Electric has no place in the mind of an old-school petrolhead. The future waits for no man, and as much as people want to complain, eclectic power and electric-assisted powerplants are here to stay for the foreseeable future.

The Lamborghini Revuelto is an engineering marvel, the car features all the typical angular Lamborghini looks to make it a properly stunning supercar. The biggest news with the car was that it was the automaker’s first foray into hybrid powerplants. But the powers that be were clever enough to not produce the ICE component of the setup with a smaller capacity motor. Taking lessons from AMG with the 2.0 litre C63. The L545 engine in the Revuelto is still a monstrous 6.5-litre V12, but some changes see the lump weigh in a mere 218 kg and is rated to produce a whopping 589 kW (814 hp) with 725 Nm of torque. Lamborghini claims this is good enough to propel the supercar from 0-100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds with a top speed that’s also over the 350 km/h mark. The magic of new technology comes in the form of three electric motors. One motor has been integrated into the transmission with the remaining two located at the front wheels. With all the power combined, the setup takes the total power output to 746 kW (1, 015 hp) with 1,062 Nm of torque! The wet weight is 1,880 kg, so not too bad considering batteries are known to add more weight than engineers would like. With the Revuelto being a new offering, in the UK it lists at £447,000, which translates to around R10,500,000. The official 2023 list price here is slightly more at R13,000,000. Is the Revuelto worth that premium for the new technologies, or would it be better to invest in an Aventador SVJ. Well, assuming you’d actually be driving the car often instead of letting sit in a warehouse to keep the mileage down and the value up.
