BMW M GmbH officially came to life in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH. The division was created to give BMW a serious edge in motorsport, and the brief was simple: build race cars that could dominate. The first major project was the BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile”, a homologation special that went on to clean up in touring car racing and set the tone for everything that followed. By the late 1970s, BMW M had its first full-blown road car: the BMW M1 (1978–1981). It was a mid-engined supercar designed with help from Lamborghini, and though production was limited, it cemented M as a badge that meant something far beyond the race track. The 1980s were when M truly hit its stride. The E12 M535i was the first production BMW to wear an M badge, but it was the E28 M5 (1984) that really set the formula: understated looks, everyday usability, and a monster engine under the hood - in this case, the M1’s inline-six. The E30 M3 (1986) followed, arguably the most legendary M car of all time, designed to dominate Group A touring car racing. Lightweight, high-revving, and precise, it became the archetype of the driver’s car.
Through the 1990s and 2000s, M kept delivering icons like the E36 and E46 M3s, balancing performance and daily usability, the E39 M5 that was widely regarded as one of the best sports sedans ever built, with its rumbling naturally aspirated V8, and also the M SUVs (X5 M and X6 M) in the late 2000s that ruffled purist feathers but proved that performance could be applied to anything with a BMW badge. M cars became benchmarks across the board, whether it was the M2, M3, M4, M5, or even niche projects like the M Coupe, a.k.a the Clownshoe.
