WE QUITE LIKE THE JETTA GLI PERFORMANCE CONCEPT DEBUTED AT SEWMA 2022

When automakers create a concept car, in many cases it will be something wild and over the top to accentuate what the automaker is capable of doing when the rules are chucked into the bin. When we see someone like Volkswagen debut a concept car that’s not too far removed from what we usually see in production it makes us a lil happy because there’s a much higher likelihood that the car could make it into proper series production, or even just a limited edition unit. At the very least what we see here could in some way or form be added to Volkswagen’s own aftermarket range of options. With this Jetta GLI Performance Concept inspiration comes from the past glory era of touring cars and so there’s changes to the bodywork, trimmings and of course, to the engine’s specs. Also, they say wheels can make or break a car’s looks, and in this case Volkswagen USA absolutely nailed it.

You have to agree that the work carried out by Volkswagen Design Center California works on the Golf GTi’s elongated sibling using a  2022 Jetta GLI Autobahn in 6-speed manual spec. “The Jetta GLI concept was an opportunity for our team to draw from our passion for motorsports and create a vision that is even more expressive and exciting than the production vehicle already is,” said Reto Brun, Senior Director Volkswagen Design Center California. “The wide body design gives this GLI concept the stance that every enthusiast dreams of and the graphic treatment underlines its more aggressive nature, while incorporating classic GLI elements.”

The list of changes to the base model includes 0.8 inches wider fenders all round, beefed up side skirts to match, a custom front bumper with a upsized grille intakes, grille inserts and a lower valance with twin-exit exhausts, a pretty cool wrap and of course, those really wicked 20-inch Forged Rotiform GRZ wheels with Aerodisc covers. Handling is improved with RacingLine Stage 3+ 6-piston forged calipers with 380 mm discs, RacingLine TrackSport coilover suspension kit that was bred on track. Under the hood the fiddling includes adding a bigger turbo to the 2.0 EA888 powerplant in the form of a RacingLine’s IS38 turbo-based performance package, an R600 carbon fibre cold-air intake, a performance intercooler, an oil management kit and an uprated performance clutch package. This sees the power increase from the factory power output of 170 kW and 350 Nm to 260 kW and just on 505 Nm, which it's pretty damn impressive. In the cain there’s a set of classic Recaro Pole Position ABE seats with integrated headrests and high bolsters finished in a custom ‘Texagon’ themed upholstery.
