BEN COLLINS (OG STIG) RATES THE HURACAN STO AGAINST PORSCHE'S 992 GT3

In motoring’s top echelons there’s weekly battles for supremacy that most mere mortals have no clue about. Here at SXdrv we like to think of car people as more than mere mortals and so we do our best to keep tabs on the outcomes of these battles and when the more interesting ones pop up, like this comparison of Lamborghini’s most powerful street-legal hypercar we all know as the Huracan STO, versus Porsche’s iconic 992 GT3 911. Arguably two of the best looking cars from each manufacturer, and not to mention amongst the most precision driving tools possible. In fact, the Huracan STO is marketed as a racecar for the road, and it’s exactly that, although the finishing and appointments set the Huracan apart from actual racecars.

The Lamborghini Huracan STO differs from many of the similar cars in this class with only the rear wheels being driven by a normally aspirated powerplant. Said power is derived from a screaming 5.2-liter V-10 lump that's tuned to produce a mighty impressive 471kW (631hp) right up at 8 000rpm (471kW) with an equally impressive 601Nm of torque. This setup is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission capable of lightning fast shifts.

On the German side of this battle, we find the Porsche 992 GT3 fitted with that automaker’s normally aspirated flat six that produces 375kW (502hp) with 470Nm of torque, which is also sent to the rear wheels like with the STO. When this GT3 is equipped with the lightning quick PDK transmission, it can do the benchmark zero to 100km/h sprint in a Porsche-claimed 3.4-seconds and can run on to a top speed 318km/h (197.6 mph). In comparison, the Lamborghini Huracan STO has a quicker claimed sprint to the 100km/h mark, if you can wrap your mind around that. It’s claimed at a ridiculously quick 3.0-seconds. Sure than may be just 0.4 seconds faster, but when you’re playing in these leagues, it’s all in the split seconds. While it will get to the measured benchmark quicker, the STO is slower on top with it’s highest speed capped at 310km/h.

Sure there’s plenty people who can review and test these cars, but in this case the crew from Supercar Driver had a guest driver almost as iconic as the cars themselves. Ben Collins, also know to car mad people around the world a BBC Top Gear’s The Stig, a faceless test driver named after rally legend Stig Blomqvist. You’ll likely be watching this video at least three times, once to see the Lamborghini Huracan STO looking oh so awesome on moody windy roads, then a second time to watch it while focusing on the Porsche 992 GT3, and the last time to listen to Ben’s expert commentary.
