BMW GROUP CLASSIC EXPANDS DIGITAL ARCHIVE WITH COMPREHENSIVE HISTORICAL MODEL OVERVIEWS - YOU CAN ACCESS IT TOO

For enthusiasts, historians, and journalists alike, diving into the legacy of BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad has never been easier. BMW Group Classic has now made its extensive historical model catalog available to the public, supplementing the recently revised BMW Group Online Archive with a detailed, user-friendly research tool. BMW Group Classic began this initiative in 2021 by making the historic model overviews of MINI and BMW Motorrad available online. Now, with the inclusion of BMW’s historic model overview, a comprehensive archive spanning 80 years of automotive history (1928–2008) is accessible to fans worldwide. Visitors to the BMW Group Classic website can now explore 424 BMW models, from the earliest BMW 3/15 hp model to the beloved BMW 3 Series (E46), including iconic roadsters like the BMW Z4 (E85/E86).

What You’ll Find in the Archive

The online catalog features short yet informative summaries for each classic model, covering key aspects such as model series, body variants, and engine specifications. These entries are enhanced with stunning high-quality images sourced from the BMW Group Classic vehicle collection and the BMW Media Archive. The sheer scale of this effort is impressive—614 data sets and 524 images were processed to bring the archive to life. Beyond just static records, this tool is future-proofed, ensuring that newer generations of classic BMW models can be seamlessly added over time. For those looking to dive even deeper into the history of BMW Group and its brands, additional resources are available through the recently updated BMW Group Classic Online Archive. This treasure trove of historical materials includes brochures, workshop manuals, owner’s literature, and specialist books, making it an invaluable resource for researchers and collectors.

Katrin Gfrörer, Head of BMW Group Archives and Historic Vehicle Collection: “By making our complete historical model overviews available online, we meet a high external demand for historical product information that has existed for many years and maximizes customer satisfaction with another digital tool. In addition, most of the database in our online archive is publicly available on the BMW Group Archive website and can be used for information and research purposes. These measures impressively underline BMW Group Classic's digitization strategy."
