F1 HAVOC! AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX HIGHLIGHTS
This past race weekend, hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, goes to show just how unpredictable this motorsport can be!
Saturday's qualifying saw yet another last-minute red flag in Q3, which secured Charles Leclerc Pole position yet again. And, unlike in Monaco, this time he would go on to start the race. In second position on the grid was Lewis Hamilton, followed by Max Verstappen in third.
Straight after lights out on Sunday's main race, the three leading drivers maintained their positions in the first lap, with Sergio Perez overtaking Pierre Gasly up into fourth position. Unfortunately, Leclerc lost his position to both Hamilton and Max soon thereafter, and then eventually to Sebastian Vettel as well.
The three leading drivers maintained their positions until the 5 laps remaining mark, where Max Verstappen suffered a rear left tyre blowout, which forced the Dutchman into the wall at 300kph and an instant DNF, and a red flag for the rest of the drivers.
After a nail-biting race restart with only 2 laps to go, Lewis Hamilton inched in front of Sergio Perez, the race leader, on approach to the first corner. But Lewis Hamilton locked up his front wheels, which sent him flying into the runoff area and ultimately losing any chance at winning the race!
Sergio Perez took home the win at the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix, followed by an outstanding performance by Sebastian Vettel, who secured the first-ever podium for Aston Martin Racing. In third position was Pierre Gasly in the Alpha Tauri.
It was a devastating race end for Max Verstappen and Red Bull who, for a moment, thought they would instantly lose any hope of the World Championship. After Lewis Hamilton suffered a lockup at the last minute of the race, Red Bull not only retains the Championship lead with Max Verstappen, they also position themselves even further in the Constructors Championship by 24 points!
