HYUNDAI N UNVEILS IONIQ 5 N TIME ATTACK SPEC READY TO ATTACK THE FAMED PPIH
At the recent Nürburgring 24 Hours, the chaps from Hyundai N competed in their trio of Elantra N TCR cars, but the company took the chance to unveil a new racecar during its N24 showcase. The Korean powerhouse unveiled the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N TA Spec - a car that is much like the regular IONIQ N, except that TA in the name stands for Time Attack and that means the car was specially developed with time attack racing in mind. One of the most famous time attack races in the world is the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, and that’s exactly where this car is aiming to make it’s tyre-shredding EV mark. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N TA Spec car and the Hyundai N team are targeting the Electric Production SUV/Crossover and Electric Modified SUV/Crossover records, and if you know anything about this car, it stands a great chance of taking the title. The regular street version, the IONIQ 5 N is a ridiculously powerful EV that looks like a proper futuristic hot hatch, even though it's technically a compact SUV. The IONIQ 5 N TA will also be used for collaborations with Gran Turismo for some proper Sim-Racing marketing. The 505 kW IONIQ 5 N TA Spec is designed to highlight the production-spec IONIQ 5 N’s strengths without fundamentally altering the car which means it's more easily relatable to the buying public. The showroom IONIQ 5 N’s OEM high-performance power electric system is carried over and the maximum output has been increased through software tuning, so the rear motor has 27 kW more than the regular version. Hyundai N has chosen to utilise N Active Sound+ with modified speakers to both enhance feedback for the driver and replace sirens typical of electric Pikes Peak race cars - modern car problems are weird. To adapt the cars for Pikes Peak they were fitted with new shock absorbers, motorsport-spec brakes, Yokohama ADVAN 005 slick tyres, and a unique high-downforce aerodynamic package, a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, a Sabelt six-point Hans safety harness, a PPIHC-specification roll cage and an EV fire suppression system.
At PPIHC, the two IONIQ 5 N and two IONIQ 5 N TA Spec entrants will try their hand at the 20 km, 156-turn race to the clouds, all wearing special livery for the event. The IONIQ 5 N TA Spec cars will be driven by Robin Shute, a four-time overall winner at Pikes Peak and current ‘King of the Mountain’ title holder, along with Dani Sordo, a Spanish World Rally Championship and Hyundai Motorsport driver. The IONIQ 5 N production models will be driven by Paul Dallenbach, 11-time PPIHC winner and three-time ‘King of the Mountain,’ as well as Ron Zaras, a PPIHC rookie and automotive media personality. Hyundai has been at PPOH before, their first involvement dating back to 1992 when well-known driver Rod Millen won the 2-Wheel Drive Showroom Stock division with a time of 13:21.17 in a Hyundai S-Coupe equipped with the company’s then-new turbocharged DOHC Alpha engine. Rod’s son, Rhys, is also a favourite with the Hyundai chaps thanks to that time he set a course class record in a Hyundai Genesis Coupe. The cars will no doubt do well, it seems the IONIQ 5N and any variation of it is simply set for success.
