LANDO NORRIS PROVES A LAP OF SILVERSTONE IS POSSIBLE IN A LIFE-SIZE LEGO MCLAREN P1

The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive have just taken on their wildest challenge yet - recreating a fully functional, life-size McLaren P1 using nothing but LEGO Technic pieces. And to put this masterpiece to the test, none other than McLaren F1 driver who’s doing big things on track in recent races, Lando Norris, was called in for the ultimate trial: a lap around the legendary Silverstone Circuit in the 1:1 scale LEGO Technic McLaren P1. This beast of a build consists of a staggering 342,817 LEGO Technic elements, tipping the scales at a whopping 1,220 kg. It’s not just for show either—this LEGO P1 has functional steering, making it the first LEGO creation ever capable of tackling tricky racetrack corners. Powered by LEGO Technic Function batteries combined with an electric car battery, this model goes farther than any LEGO vehicle has before. The project brought together 23 specialists from LEGO and McLaren, who worked a mind-blowing 8,344 hours to design and construct this masterpiece, using 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements. The result? A faithful recreation of McLaren’s legendary P1, ready for action. Naturally, with a car and project this special, it was only fitting to use Norris. To be fair, only someone the size of an F1 driver would do. The British F1 ace took on the famous twists and turns of Silverstone, completing a full lap in the LEGO McLaren P1, although it was much, much, much slower than the lifesize McLaren P1. The iconic circuit was the perfect backdrop for this challenge, with its deep-rooted connection to McLaren’s racing heritage.

Ben Gulliver, McLaren Automotive’s Test & Development Director, couldn’t be prouder: “Having worked on the original P1, it’s incredible to see how the LEGO Technic team brought so many authentic elements of the car to life. The P1 was an icon, and through this collaboration, we hope to inspire the next generation of automotive innovators.” Lukáš Horák, Senior Project Manager of Installations at the LEGO Group, added, “This project is a testament to the close partnership between LEGO and McLaren. Combining McLaren’s engineering expertise with our LEGO Model Production team allowed us to create something as authentic to the original P1 as possible, turning a dream into reality.”
