THE AWESOME NEW BMW M5 TOURING MOTOGP SAFETY CAR JOINS THE GRID IN SPECTACULAR BANGKOK UNVEILING
MotoGP didn’t just kick off the countdown to the 2025 season - it did it in full-throttle fashion. For the first time, all teams and riders gathered in Bangkok for a fan-first spectacle, setting the stage for an electrifying year ahead. Front and centre? The brand-new BMW M5 Touring MotoGP Safety Car was unveiled in dramatic style as it joins BMW’s elite fleet of official safety vehicles. The launch took place in One Bangkok, a newly developed district that provided the perfect backdrop for an event of this magnitude. The celebration started with a high-energy parade of all MotoGP™ riders, led by the M5 Touring Safety Car itself. Fans on-site got to experience the action up close, while the rest of the world tuned in via a global live stream.
“This event in Bangkok was an incredible way to introduce our BMW M5 Touring MotoGP Safety Car to the world,” said Axel Mittler, Marketing Manager at BMW M GmbH. “Just like its sedan counterpart, the Touring version is powered by our M HYBRID powertrain—a high-revving V8 paired with an electric motor for instant torque and relentless power. Whether in sedan or Touring form, the new M5 Safety Cars bring agility, control, and cutting-edge tech to MotoGP™.”
Marc Saurina, Head of Global Commercial Partnerships at Dorna Sports, added: “BMW M has been a key part of MotoGP™ for 27 seasons, delivering safety vehicles that blend motorsport DNA with cutting-edge engineering. The new M5 Touring Safety Car continues this tradition—not just looking the part but being built for the demands of the fastest motorcycle racing on the planet.”
BMW M has been the Official Car of MotoGP since 1999, supplying Safety Cars, Medical Cars, and Safety Bikes to the championship. The latest addition to the lineup is based on the recently launched BMW M5 Touring, which boasts a 535 kW M HYBRID powertrain and a colossal 1,000 Nm of torque. When all of that technology and power come together, it culminates in a wagon with more than supercar performance - even with its massive size and its 2,550 kg heft - it’s capable of doing an acceleration launch for the benchmark 0-100 km/h shunt in as little as just 3.6 seconds. It has an electric top speed of a decent 140 km/h and the regular version has a top speed of 250 km/h, but with the right package option that rises to a properly fast 305 km/h.
Built for racetrack duty, it receives a suite of modifications to ensure it meets the extreme demands of leading a MotoGP pack. Visually, the new M5 Touring MotoGP Safety Car wears a livery inspired by BMW’s M Hybrid V8 race cars, which compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA series. It’s a nod to BMW’s deep motorsport heritage and a reminder that every M car is “Born on the racetrack, made for the street.” For now, the new Safety Car remains on display in Bangkok, gearing up for its official on-track debut at the 2025 MotoGP™ season opener in Buriram, Thailand (28 Feb – 2 Mar). From there, it’ll do what BMW M does best - set the pace, lead the way, and bring race-bred performance to the frontline of MotoGP safety.
