THE PORSCHE TAYCAN GTS SETS THE COOLEST DRIFT RECORD THERE IS.

Porsche has once again cemented its name in the record books, this time by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous drift on ice by an electric vehicle. This feat marks the fourth Guinness World Record title for Porsche’s all-electric sports sedan, further showcasing its impressive handling dynamics - even in the harshest conditions. The record attempt took place on January 14, 2025, under the typically challenging conditions at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, Finland, about 150 km north of the Arctic Circle. The ice surface presented an unexpected challenge, as the relentless drifting put immense strain on the track. “Under the extreme continuous load of the drifting Taycan, the ice track deteriorated faster than expected,” said Richter. “We therefore had to abort the first attempt after around 11 kilometers.” It seems a like a bit of an oversight, especially with so many clever people involved in something like this, it’s sorta common logic that spinning tyres generate heat, even on ice. But hey, that’s a Matric-level thought. Porsche wasn’t ready to concede defeat, adapting to the conditions, the team opted for shorter spikes on the tyres and leveraged the dropping nighttime temperatures to improve the ice surface. The adjustments proved successful, and Richter was able to keep the Taycan GTS in a seamless drift for 132 laps, covering a record-setting 17.503 km and shattering the previous benchmark of 14.809 km. “With our new Guinness World Records title on ice, the Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving qualities,” said Richter. “And this time even with all-wheel drive. The fact that the Taycan GTS can be controlled so well even under extreme conditions speaks volumes for its excellent chassis and balanced performance.”

The record attempt was meticulously monitored by Guinness World Records officials, with adjudicator Carl Saville overseeing the proceedings. To ensure accuracy, the Porsche Taycan GTS was equipped with a professional GPS measuring device, tracking not only the distance covered but also key metrics such as steering inputs, throttle control, braking activity, and G-forces exerted on the vehicle. The drift circle for the attempt measured 59 meters in diameter, providing a tight yet challenging space to maintain the sustained oversteer. The Taycan GTS ran on commercially available Michelin tyres fitted with 1 mm spikes to enhance grip on the slippery AF ice surface. Upon completion of the record-breaking run, Saville officially confirmed the achievement and presented the record certificate to Jens Richter and Christian Lehwald, Managing Director of the Porsche Arctic Center and Head of Porsche Experience and New Platforms at Porsche AG. Porsche is no stranger to setting remarkable records with the Taycan. This latest achievement adds to an already impressive list of Guinness World Records held by the electric sports car:

2023: The Taycan Cross Turismo set the record for the greatest altitude change by an electric vehicle, climbing from 5,573 meters along the Xinjiang-Tibet route.

2021: Racing driver Leh Keen set the record for the fastest speed driven inside an enclosed building, reaching 165.1 km/h in a Taycan at an exhibition hall in New Orleans, Louisiana.

2020: Porsche Experience instructor Dennis Retera completed 210 laps at the Porsche Experience Center Hockenheimring, covering 42.171 km in a continuous drift, securing the record for the longest drift in an electric car.

The record-breaking event was held as part of the Porsche Ice Experience, a unique winter driving program that has been hosted in Finnish Lapland since 1996 and in Levi since 2014. Each year, over 1,500 participants take part in the experience, refining their car control skills on specially designed snow and ice tracks while enjoying a carefully curated program of winter activities. Spread across 300,000 square meters, the Porsche Arctic Center offers a variety of training modules tailored to different skill levels, including Discover, Learn, Boost, and Race. For the 2025 season, the track has undergone a comprehensive renovation by renowned circuit designer Hermann Tilke, the mastermind behind numerous modern Formula 1 circuits.
