THE IONIQ 5 N DK EDITION WAS CREATED WITH KEIICHI TSUCHIYA'S INPUT - NICE!
Over the last few years, we’ve seen offerings from Korean automakers that have caught the attention of the world’s motoring press. The cars have not only become good enough to rival what the usual major automakers are creating, but they’ve also managed to sway buyers into their fold. Kia has had some interesting cars like the Stinger, but Hyundai has been churning out top-level cars for the petrol-powered and electric markets like the range under the N banner, akin to BMW’s M division. The i20 N, i30 N, Kona N, Elantra N and Veloster N have cemented themselves as a brilliant choice for those who want a performance-oriented car, not only do they have the looks and the power, but they also have brilliant handling and dynamics, not to mention the tech that’s part of the package. On the electric vehicles front, Hyundai recently introduced the IONIQ range, our favourite being the IONIQ 5 N because it’s a true hot hatch in every sense of the word. The IONIQ 5 N is a beastly little thing, it's equipped with a pair of electric motors, the front motor is rated at a cool 166 kW while the rear motor is rated at a powerful 282 kW which is already more power than any petrol-powered hot hatch, but when you consider that these motors work in tandem, the hatchback has a total of 448 kW of power on tap. It doesn’t end there though, the IONIQ 5 N has a specific drive mode called N Grin Boost and when activated it takes the total power up to an unbelievable 478 kW. The company also created a limited-edition IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup version that has a race-spec aero package and all the special bits you’d expect in a track-ready car that makes it even more competent than the regular version. And now there’s another special edition aimed at those who like to chuck a car sideways.
Hyundai has unveiled the IONIQ 5 N DK Edition, a performance-focused tuning package that adds in the expertise of the legendary Keiichi Tsuchiya, a.k.a Drift King. In case you don’t know, Tsuchiya is a top Japanese racing driver credited with popularising the art of drifting. His groundbreaking techniques, showcased in countless racing events and videos, earned him the nickname. Tsuchiya is also famous for his role in developing Japan’s touge racing culture and his involvement in motorsports and his influence on automotive culture extends beyond Japan. The IONIQ 5 N DK Edition is a fusion of Hyundai’s N division engineering and Tsuchiya’s understanding of vehicle dynamics. Every element of the DK Edition has been carefully crafted and rigorously tested on Japan’s legendary racetracks and touge roads to meet Tsuchiya’s exacting standards.
DK-Spec changes:
21” Forged Wheels: Wider yet lighter, these wheels feature rim knurling for improved tyre grip and response.
Lowering Springs: The DK Edition’s springs work seamlessly with the IONIQ 5 N’s electronically controlled suspension, reducing the ride height by 15mm for a lower centre of gravity and enhanced stability.
Aerodynamics: Lightweight carbon fibre components, including a front splitter, rear spoiler, side skirts, and a rear diffuser, add a combined 93 kgf of downforce at 140 km/h. These features improve both stability and high-speed cornering performance.
Braking Power: The braking system includes a 6-pot monoblock brake system with duralumin calipers and performance brake pads, offering increased pad area for exceptional stopping power and fade resistance.
Form Meets Function: Beyond its performance enhancements, the IONIQ 5 N DK Edition exudes an aggressive aesthetic. The carbon fibre elements not only improve aerodynamics but also give the car awesome visuals.
