HERE'S THE TOP 15 LOCAL BEASTS ACCORDING TO HILLCLIMB MONSTERS. SA FTW!
Year after year, the annual Simola Hill Climb held in the ridiculously picturesque hills of Knysna keeps getting better and better. Just when you think the event is perfect, the powers that be find ways to improve and streamline. It’s constantly evolving for the better, and that means it not only attracts more people to the usually sleepy little town to spectate, but it also broadens the appeal to competitors. When someone tells you an event is on an international level, this is the kind of thing they mean. When every event sees international competitors and spectators in attendance, that means more international exposure. A bonus to the event is that it’s live-streamed on social media at no charge, which adds to the exposure and interest levels. Over and above the drivers, teams and spectators, we’re starting to see more and more international media taking an interest in things, including the YouTube channel that features the world’s best hill climb events and cars - HillClimb Monsters. The weekend-long race meeting takes place up a steep, winding 1.9 km-long stretch of road that takes less than a minute to complete for the fast cars, and it’s become a bucket list event for thousands of motorsport fans, drivers, photographers and content creators. The racing is divided into a variety of categories and classes, starting with Classic Car Friday which features loads of rare racecars from every era of racing you can think of, while Saturday and Sunday are for the King of the Hill shootout, the highlight of the weekend, especially the Modified Saloon Cars class that’s packed with some of the country’s fastest cars and drivers, some professional, some privateers - all talented and fast.
This is the part of the event that sees a decent number of purposefully built hill climb cars compete, and that’s the stuff that they like on HillClimb Monsters. It’s actually really cool when you scroll through YouTube and you see a channel with closing in on 500,000 subscribers and massive international brand recognition publish videos dedicated to Simola and the cars that attend. The HillClimb Monsters crew have actually covered the event since 2019, so if you haven’t seen their content, it’s about time you headed over there to play catch up. With Simola taking place in May of 2025, we’re starting to see people searching for content to see what cars are and were there, and what the event is all about. The advertising for the 2025 instalment has already started, and to add to the 15th running of the event, it’s just been given a rebranding. The Simola top brass has unveiled a new logo and identity. “Reaching our 15th year is huge for us,” says event organizer Ian Shrosbree. “The Simola Hillclimb has grown beyond our wildest expectations, earning massive support both locally and internationally. Our livestream coverage has opened up a global audience, and each year we’ve worked to make the event even more exciting for fans and drivers alike. With this new logo, we’re ready to elevate the experience and make an even bigger mark on the motorsport scene.” HillClimb Monsters have also started, and they just released their take on the top 15 cars from the 2024 running earlier this year. Take a look and let us know if you agree on the cars chosen as being the best, we think they have it right. The best part about these videos is that they show the rest of the world that SA has some seriously competitive cars and drivers among the lions and zebra that reportedly walk the streets here. Because they’re pros at this, the video is divided into sections so it’s easy to find footage of a specific car, if you don’t have time for the whole video.
