UNHEARD RADIO FROM HAMILTON AFTER ENTERING CLOSED PIT LANE AT MONZA
Take a listen to this unheard radio conversation between Lewis Hamilton and the race stewards after making a Grand Prix killing move by entering the pit lane when it was closed.
After a fantastic qualifying session on Saturday the 5th of September 2020 at the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix at Monza, Lewis Hamilton brought in the fastest lap time which guaranteed him and Mercedes Pole position on the race day.
Hamilton pushed his hardest through the first third of the race as you'd expect. But after Kevin Magnussen in his Haas came to a stop alongside the barriers on the right-hand side of the track, the FIA felt that the best option to retrieve the car was to push it forwards down the pitlane. The red crosses were raised and that temporarily put a close to the pit lane. Despite passing two red cross warnings, Lewis Hamilton still entered the pit lane, which caused a serious 10-second drive through penalty to be awarded to the Mercedes world champion, which ultimately cost him the Italian Grand Prix at Monza 2020.
A few laps later, Charles Leclerc had a massive crash into the tyre barriers, which brought the race to a stop while they fixed them. Lewis served his penalty on the restart, which put him at the back of the pack. He fought back though, finishing in 7th place and causing a stir, with many comparing his excellent performance to that of his Mercedes teammate, Valteri Bottas, who could only manage P5 after starting second on the grid.
