VIDEO: CARLOS SAINZ WINS THE 2018 DAKAR RALLY FOR THE SECOND TIME

Carlos Sainz, 55, has sealed his second ever victory of the Dakar Rally, piloting his Peugeot to victory in Argentina on Saturday. The now double world rally champion won his first Dakar with Volkswagen back in 2010.

Sainz and his illustrious co-driver, Lucas Cruz, beat Toyota's Nasser Al-Attiyah – Qatar's two-time winner to second place, while South Africa's Giniel de Villiers finished third in his Toyota.

With this win, the Peugeot works team has sealed their third victory in a row... and then dropped the bombshell that they will not be competing again.

Going into the final stage, Sainz had a 46-minute advantage over Al-Attiyah and, despite finishing ninth on the day, still managed to hold off his rivals, winning by 43 minutes 40 seconds in the end.

Sainz said, "[Peugeot] have already won two times, but I think I deserved this victory because we have put a lot of effort into this car.

"I had ups and downs, but I always tried my best. Especially this rally, it has been so, so hard.

"At the beginning I said we'll take it a little bit easier, but Peugeot said we'd have to go flat out. I raced a couple of days and pushed really hard, but then the race was a case of not making mistakes."

His son, Carlos Sainz Jr – who races as No55 for Renault's Formula One team – Tweeted his congratulations, saying;

"I am probably the proudest son of his father in the whole world. Winner of the toughest @dakar ever done in South America at 55 years of age (good number) and he did it in his own way."

Austria's Matthias Walkner, who was runner-up to his British team-mate, Sam Sunderland, last year, won the motorcycle category for his first Dakar victory and KTM's 17th in a row. Yup, SEVENTEEN in a row.

Russia's Eduard Nikolaev won the truck category in a Kamaz for the second year in a row and his third overall.

The quadbike title was taken by Chilean, Ignacio Casale, for the second time.
