VIDEO: THE HENNESSEY VENOM GT SPYDER JUST SET A 265-MPH WORLD RECORD, IN A CONVERTIBLE!
Back in 2013, the topless version of the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, the Grand Sport Vitesse, hit a top speed of 254 mph. But tuner John Hennessey thought his creation, the Venom GT Spyder, could go faster. Turns out, yes, the Venom GT Spyder can go faster. A lot faster.
What speed did it hit? 265.6 mph. Yeah, that's pretty darn fast—fast enough to set a claimed world record for fastest convertible. Talk about wind in your hair.
Of course, that's what you'll get when you stuff a twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8 making 1451 hp and 1287 lb.-ft. of torque in a lightweight, modified Lotus Elise chassis. Not even a quad-turbo W12 could top that.
But will Bugatti be content to let the Venom take its record away? With the hardtop Chiron rumored to already be capable of 288 mph, Hennessey might not be on top for long. A topless version of the Chiron is inevitable, and once that exists, we have a feeling Hennessey's record won't be so safe.
