ALPINA REVEAL THE D3 S SALOON AND ESTATE DIESEL

Alpina, purveyors of modified BMWs, have revealed their latest BMW 3 Series offerings, the D3S saloon and estate, powered by diesel to the tune of 350bhp and 730Nm of torque.

It goes without saying that Alpina is a legend in the field of making a terrific car even better. In this case, they've turned the BMW 330d xDrive into the Alpina D3 S and, unexpectedly, it is a monster.

Arriving in two body types, a saloon and estate, the Alpina D3 S receives the same styling as its petrol-powered B3 sibling. These cosmetic upgrades add a new body kit, which includes a deep front splitter that gulps in air and gives the D3 S an aggressive face. At the back, an intimidating rear diffuser adds purpose, while the new, pinched side skirts are deeper. New flared wheel arches complete a slightly wide-body look.

The chassis, too, has been migrated across from the Alpina B3. This gives the new D3 S brand-new adaptive dampers and uprated Eibach springs, a reconfigured electronic power steering system and a new electronically controlled limited-slip differential for better handling.

A set of larger diameter disc brakes bring the Alpina to a halt, but a high-performance braking system with lighter drilled discs and uprated brake pads can be specced for a fee.

Alpina has also increased the track and wheelbase of the D3 S in the name of improved handling, with the option of standard-fit 19-inch alloy wheels and Pirelli P Zero tyres or optional 20-inch multi-spoke alloys doing duty on each corner.

This is where the similarities between the B3 and D3 S sibling end because the latter receives the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six diesel powertrain from the BMW 330d. Increases of power outputs by 92bhp and 170Nm of torque to 350bhp and 730Nm are achieved with the inclusion of new intercoolers and uprated cooling system, free-flow exhaust and tweaks to the ECU.

All of this power is delivered through the revised eight-speed gearbox to all four wheels. This gets the diesel Alpina D3 S from 0-62mph in 4.6-seconds and cracks on to a top speed of 170mph.

The cabin includes the digital gauge cluster and iDrive infotainment system from the standard 3 Series but, like all other Alpina's, the interior of the D3 S is customisable. There's a variety of trim variants for the upholstery, stitching for the centre console and dashboard, with embossing options for the comfy seats.

Prices have not been confirmed as yet, but anticipate figures from £61,000 for the saloon and £62,500 for the estate. You can place your orders now, with deliveries expected to start in November.
