CARS & CHRONO - 1 0F 1 '72 PORSCHE TARGA 911 + CHRONOGRAPH 1 911 S 2.4 TARGA TIMEPIECE COMBINATION IS PURE FIRE
In a weird twist of fate, there are a few well-known automotive brands that are celebrating their 50th anniversary and in true automotive fashion, these automakers have created a plethora of limited edition cars and merchandise in celebration. One such self-congratulating project has to be one of the coolest so far, well I guess that depends on how much you like Porsche. This special project is a one-of-one combination that will go on auction at Sotheby’s soon during their New York Luxury Week this year; an exceptionally restored 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa with a unique timepiece based on the legendary Porsche Design Chronograph I from Porsche’s founding year. The well-to-do Porsche collectors will no doubt end up in quite an aggressive bidding war for this special car and chrono combination - it will be the perfect addition to any car collection.
This unique timepiece, the Chronograph 1 – 911 S 2.4 Targa was actually created especially for the auction, and what makes it unique is the design of the winding rotor on the back of the case, which corresponds to the historic Fuchsfelge® wheel of the Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa from 1972, also known as Cookie Cutter wheels. This feature gives it a direct reference to the 911 Targa it’s named after. The 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa has been restored as part of a unique project by Porsche Classic in collaboration with Porsche Design where a lot of the design input came from Roland Heiler and Studio F. A. Porsche in Zell am See. “Our general philosophy in a factory restoration project is to restore the vehicles to be as faithful to the original as possible,” explains Uwe Makrutzki, Head of Porsche Classic Factory Restoration at Porsche AG.
"We deliberately took a different approach with this project. We've created a unique vehicle that blends tradition and present day, and bears the signature of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche." The Targa features original historic fabrics like the black Sport-Tex checkered flag upholstery except in this case it’s been embossed with a ‘50 Years of Porsche Design Edition’ on the side stripes, headrests and dashboard. The Targa roll bar has the same Platinum Satin finish to mimic the brushed stainless steel of the original. A ’50 Years of Porsche Design’ plaque with a copy of Prof. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s autography can be found on the grille of the engine cover at the rear.
The Targa features the same colour scheme as the OG model with black being the main focus inside and out. The car also comes with a customised owner’s manual and tool that also sports the ’50 Years of Porsche Design’ logo, and there’s also a restoration case filled with detailed documentation on the restoration project, a key fob and a model car matching the 1:1. The accompanying Chronograph I timepiece features a matte black dial, a red stopwatch second hand, luminescent hour indices high-quality anti-glare crystal and the dial, crown, wristband, and case-back all feature the Porsche Design logo. The timepiece was also modernised by making use of titanium and the addition of a new movement and water-resistant case. The watch features the WERK 01.140 calibre, a high-performance, modern Porsche Design automatic movement with COSC certification, technically adapted to be "state-of-the-art." While the car and the timepiece are sold as a 1-of-1 combination Porsche fanatics have the opportunity to own the Chronograph 1 as it’s been limited to 500 pieces. The car & chrono combination has an estimated value of $275,000 USD – $325,000 USD (R4.6mil to R5.4 mil).
