From the crew that brings us the annual Idle Auto Fest comes an amazing initiative to help those less fortunate. Idle DRIVE 2 UNITE was the brainchild of Idle Auto Fest’s organiser’s 16-year-old ambassador and daughter, Tiamara Andrew. It was a charity event run by Blessing Lives (NPO 295-038, a section 18A-approved organisation with PBO 930080855 status) and the aim was to collect sanitary pads to distribute amongst young ladies who can’t afford this necessary hygiene product. "South Africa is currently facing a critical issue of menstrual hygiene. Many young women and girls cannot access or afford sanitary pads, which has led to absenteeism from school, and even health issues. I am grateful to have the support of our partner, the Department of Education to identify schools from Alexandra Township who desperately need our support. This year our target is to provide 5829 girls with a one-year supply of sanitary pads. Through our vehicle run which creates awareness and donations we aim to meet or exceed this amount hence I encourage you to come out in your numbers and support this great initiative", says Tiamara Andrew. How cool? Just 16 but making plans to help people!
Idle DRIVE 2 UNITE, as the name suggests, was set to be a drive for car owners to meet up for an awesome morning drive around Jo’burg while helping a worthwhile charity at the same time. Car people are cool like that. We popped by Monte Casino to hand over a few packs of sanitary pads for the collection, and as usual, we snapped a few pics because we like doing that. We did mess up a fair bit, all the event socials said there was a run with Monte as the end point from 11:00 am, so because we didn’t do the run, we wanted to get to the venue at 09:45 to shoot the cars entering the venue. The roads around Monte make for epic pics, and getting single shots of the car is better than trying to get pics in a packed parking lot. The thing is, the socials never mentioned a much earlier start and so by the time we got to Monte all the cars were already parked up - and facing the wrong way. We snapped a few cars parked around and then got a few shots as they left the venue. Many cars were missed, but here are a few samples of what we got.
