Ten of the best for MOTOR's 2022 Sports Car of the Year. Which is your pick?

Car testing is always something we like to see here at SXdrv, especially when it’s in the form of some proper in-depth testing by people who know what they’re doing. When tests are released from the likes of MOTOR, we pay attention because not only do they know how to produce a really good piece of video content, they also care more about the facts and figures and real feedback instead of saying what pleases the corporates and doing stupid things to fish for Likes and Shares. Real reporting beats clout chasing any day.

For this 2022 Sports Car Test, the MOTOR crew whittled the many cars suited to a test like this down to a more easy to manage number, a decent top 10. Ten of the best, as they say. What we like about the test is that it’s aimed at the sports car market which is often overlooked in big tests like this in favour of supercars or hypercars. In today’s world, these cars that make up this list are actually attainable by the man on the street, for the most part they’re quite affordable (country dependent of course). I know for this SXdrv man, it would be a lot easier to arrange ownership of a Yaris GR than it would any form of Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini. Even when looking at new generation hot hatches from the likes of Audi and VW, you need some pretty good income to own one.

The top ten finalists in this MOTOR test is made up of the Volkswagen Golf GTi, the Subaru BRZ, the Hyundai i20 N, the Hyundai i30 N DCT, the Toyota Yaris Rallye, the BMW 128ti, the Mazda MX-5 GT RS, the Skoda Octavia RS, the Ford Focus ST and the Ford Mustang Mach 1. It’s an eclectic list that includes front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations which means each car presents different pros and cons during the different test scenarios. We have our favourite, and obviously the MOTOR crew eventually settled on their own favourite, which is the one to take their 2022 Sports Car of the Year title.
