USA VS GERMANY - THE 2022 FORD SHELBY GT500 VS. 2022 BMW M4 - PLACE YOUR BETS!

Here at SXdrv we love seeing comparisons between cars, especially the proper fast stuff. I mean that’s what this whole automotive life is all about, right? One of the best ways to compare a pair of performance cars is to line them up, drop a flag and see who covers a measured distance in the quickest time and also with the highest speed, although the two aren’t mutually exclusive. It often happens that a quicker car can get to the line faster than a faster car, but while it gets to the destination first, it may not cross the traps with a higher top end speed. It’s the best way to figure out which car’s performance is best though.

There’s plenty ways to test the performance of a car, and in the case of this 2022 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. 2022 BMW M4 the chaps from Edmunds Cars have thrown a little extra in to spice things up and give a better overall set of testing criteria so that you can get a feel of what these cars are capable of in scenarios other than a straight line. The 2022 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. 2022 BMW M4 is most definitely a comparison that performance junkies would like to see. The BMW M4 has amassed a worldwide following since its launch, and not that there’s a generation or so under the belt, it means the latest models are more powerful, faster and can pump out better all-round performance figures. We’re a fan of the performance offered up in the 2022 BMW M4, not so much that ghastly front end, but like some dodgy infections, it’s growing on us. The Ford Shelby GT500 is known to be fast in a straight line, but American V8s and corners have never been best friends, although back in 2015 when the latest generation of Ford Mustangs became a global model, handling has improved in leaps and suspension rebound rates.

With this in mind, the Edmunds Cars crew have developed a different kind of testing that they call the U-Drag Series. In this setup, the cars chosen for comparison are tested against each other in a U-Drag race that consists of both cars heading down the track just like in a standard drag race but at the end of the strip they don’t hit the brakes and take it easy on a return road. In this testing the cars get to the quarter mile as fast as possible and then it’s hard on the anchors in the right place at the right time to allow the car to navigate a 180-degree turn at speed before heading back to the start with the loud pedal buried in the floorboards for what’s basically a roll race. We like this because it tests a whole bunch of things instead of just straight line speed.

On paper things between the German Autobahn crusher and the modern-muscle from the American Ford stable seem to make for quite an unequal comparison. In this little versus of the 2022 Ford Shelby GT500 and the 2022 BMW M4, the numbers tell a different story to the actual real world performance. We have a modern muscle car in the form of the Shelby GT500 that’s powered by a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 with a stonking 760 hp on tap for a retail price of $81 280 going up against the precision driving machine that is the BMW M4 that’s powered by a twin-turbocharged inline 6 that produces just 503 hp for a $101 795 price tag. That’s the thing about specs on paper, they can give you an indication of what the comparison would be like, but it’s never set in stone.
