THE 1 OF 1 BUGATTI CHIRON PROFILéE SOLD FOR R197 000 000 - WHAT ELSE CAN YOU BUY FOR THAT PRICE TAG?

This Bugatti Chiron Profilée is a one-of-one version of what is arguably the world’s most easily recognisable hyper, and as expected when it first broke news, it was going to be mad money. Usually, there are some criteria needed before you can spend your millions on a Chiron, but this one was different because anyone could own it if they had the winning bid at a Sotheby’s auction. This meant the world’s 1 % who had never owned one before could buy one of the most special models ever built, and someone out there paid an absolutely unbelievable amount of $9 500 000, and when the auction house’s commission and taxes were added, it became a total sales price of $ 10 700 000. That’s easy to read but not easy to wrap your head around. In our money that equates to a number that our ex-president wouldn’t be able to pronounce even with a teleprompter helping. In SA money, that’s roughly R196 817 805.57, so let’s call that a cool one hundred and ninety-seven million Rand, depending on the exchange rate of the day. I mean yeah, it’s a whole lot of car, and the fact that it has that lightning-fast 7-speed DCT transmission bolted to the company’s iconic 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 powerplant with around 1 500 hp is next-level cool, but we’d rather spend that money on other things. Like a car for everyone we know, and possibly have ever met.

There are loads of cars we like, both modern and classic, but seeing as this uber-limited edition Bugattis is brand new (ok, it had just under 400 km on the clock at the time of the auction) we decided to see what we could get from current SA showroom floors for the same money spent. As said, this theoretical purchase would be for a fleet of the same make cars to gift all our friends and family and that friendly car guard down the road. Here’s a list of fifteen of the cars we like, and how many we can get with our imaginary millions:

Audi RS3 - R 1 246 600 - 158 units

Audi RS e-tron GT - R3 359 400 - 58 units

BMW M2 - R1 485 000 - 132 units

BMW M4 Competition - R2 125 000 - 92 units

Ford Mustang 5.0 GT - R 1 194 000 - 164 units

Porsche Taycan - R 2 355 000 - 83 units

Porsche 911 GT3 RS - R4 445 000 - 43 units
