THE LATEST DROP FROM AMALGAM COLLECTION IS THE 1:8-SCALE R316,000 FERRARI 12CILINDRI
Scale model cars are a passion for many, offering a way to "own" cars that most of us can only dream of driving. While they won’t tear up the streets or turn heads at car meets, they still deliver that thrill of ownership, just in a more miniature form. Scale model cars have come a long way since their early days. Back in the 1920s and 1930s, they were handcrafted works of art, typically made from wood or metal, and even used as promotional tools by manufacturers to show off their latest creations. As time went on, tinplate models took off, especially in Germany and Japan, where friction or clockwork-powered versions added a bit of action to the display. The post-war era brought with it a boom in die-cast models from the likes of Dinky Toys, Corgi, and Matchbox, upping the game in realism. Then came the late '50s and '60s, when plastic kits became all the rage, with companies like Revell and AMT giving enthusiasts the chance to build and customize their own detailed models. And, of course, who could forget the '70s, when Hot Wheels burst onto the scene with their eye-catching, durable, and highly collectable creations? Fast forward to the '90s, and the evolution of scale model cars reached new heights with technological advancements. Brands like Tamiya, Minichamps, and Autoart set new benchmarks for detail and craftsmanship. Nowadays, collectors can find an array of stunningly realistic models, from affordable pieces to jaw-droppingly expensive, high-end versions. While most of us can only gawk at these online, we’ve been lucky enough to get up close with a few high-rolling collectors who proudly show off their prized possessions. But among all the brands, Amalgam stands in a league of its own. Their models are not just scale replicas; they are near-perfect miniatures, with insane levels of detail and craftsmanship, often reflected in their sky-high price tags. Their one-off Ferrari 296 GTB model goes for nearly R400,000, but this is about the latest amazing release, the Ferrari 12Cilindri in 1:8 scale.
When it comes to precision and craftsmanship, few come close to the attention to detail that Amalgam pours into their scale models. Working side by side with Ferrari's design and engineering teams, they dedicated over 3,000 hours to perfecting their latest creations. Under the watchful eye of the crew at Maranello, every aspect of the model was painstakingly engineered to ensure an unmatched level of accuracy. Each 1:8 scale model takes a staggering 300 hours to hand-assemble, with a small, highly skilled team of artisans meticulously crafting each piece. Limited to just 199 units of both the Coupe and Spider, these models aren't just collectables; they're art. For the true Ferrari fanatic, Amalgam also offers bespoke, one-off models tailored to each client's precise specifications, a fitting tribute to Ferrari's 12-cylinder supercar GT - a car that celebrates 70 years of Ferrari in the U.S. market. Finished in an eye-catching Rosso Imola with a Blu Sterling interior, these 1:8 and 1:18 scale models measure 59 cm and 26 cm respectively, but their impact is far greater than their physical size. Unveiled in May 2024, Ferrari’s new V12 Berlinetta had hearts racing across the globe, and while the full-scale car was turning heads, Amalgam was already deep into development. Using top-tier materials, each model consists of thousands of precision-engineered parts, from castings and photo-etchings to CNC-machined metal components. Every single element - whether it’s the car’s aerodynamic lines or its opulent interior - has been recreated down to the finest detail, using Ferrari’s original CAD designs, paint codes, and material specs. The price for this kind of dedication? A cool $18,220 (R316,000) for the 1:8 scale Ferrari 12Cilindri Coupe and Spider models. If you’re after something even more personal, the bespoke model will set you back $25,510 (R443,000). And for the more budget-conscious enthusiast, there's the upcoming 1:18 scale model, priced at a "modest" $1,330 (R23,000).
