THE MERCEDES-AMG C63 S IS BACK WITH A LIL' VOLTAGE ON BOARD AND THE MOST POWERFUL 4-CYLINDER EVER CLAIM.
By now you will have likely seen and heard about the all-new Mercedes-AMG to hit the market in the form of the popular C-Class leading C 63, except in this case there are a few more letters added to the name and the car is now called the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance. We’ve seen all of this before, the new opart is the E Performance section and we all know that these days the letter E denotes electric power for cars instead of the usual reference to that fun recreational drug much to the dismay of 90s ravers. The C 63 used to be powered by a monster of a V8 powerplant that featured what was arguably one of the best soundtracks a streetcar could have, but emissions and technologies changed and the engine became more muted (even though performance increased) and in the latest incarnation things are very, very different.
That crackling V8 is gone, instead there’s half of one up front in the form of a turbocharged 2.0-litre. Yes, that’s right, the very thing that made the C63 a frightening opponent is gone, and that may deter potential buyers. That said, what is in play is now the most powerful production 2.0 thanks to a little electric assistance the setup sees an output of 176 kW (238 hp) per litre. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE is rated at 500 kW (680 hp) with max torque at 1020 Nm which translates into a 0-100 km/h dash in just 3.4-seconds for the sedan and estate, and top speed is capped at 280 km/h (270 km/h for the estate). That 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor on the rear axle is the game-changer. There’s fully variable all-wheel drive and active rear steering, and a drift mode. Transmission duty is taken care of with a 9-speed MCT setup and there are eight drive modes associated with this.
