Home / Social media / Cars / The Mercedes-AMG C63 S is back with a lil' voltage on board and the most powerful 4-cylinder ever claim.

By now you will have likely seen and heard about the all-new Mercedes-AMG to hit the market in the form of the popular C-Class leading C 63, except in this case there are a few more letters added to the name and the car is now called the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance. We’ve seen all of this before, the new opart is the E Performance section and we all know that these days the letter E denotes electric power for cars instead of the usual reference to that fun recreational drug much to the dismay of 90s ravers. The C 63 used to be powered by a monster of a V8 powerplant that featured what was arguably one of the best soundtracks a streetcar could have, but emissions and technologies changed and the engine became more muted (even though performance increased) and in the latest incarnation things are very, very different.

That crackling V8 is gone, instead there’s half of one up front in the form of a turbocharged 2.0-litre. Yes, that’s right, the very thing that made the C63 a frightening opponent is gone, and that may deter potential buyers. That said, what is in play is now the most powerful production 2.0 thanks to a little electric assistance the setup sees an output of 176 kW (238 hp) per litre. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE is rated at 500 kW (680 hp) with max torque at 1020 Nm which translates into a 0-100 km/h dash in just 3.4-seconds for the sedan and estate, and top speed is capped at 280 km/h (270 km/h for the estate). That 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor on the rear axle is the game-changer. There’s fully variable all-wheel drive and active rear steering, and a drift mode. Transmission duty is taken care of with a 9-speed MCT setup and there are eight drive modes associated with this.

"With the C 63 S E PERFORMANCE, we are opening a new chapter in the history of our brand. Even 55 years after our company was founded, we at AMG continue to show the boldness and the will to realise the creative, to deliver something special. The new C 63 in particular is a real game changer. With its revolutionary concept, it brings a completely new approach to the segment, which until now has been primarily characterised by the promise purely of performance. With a maximum system output of 680 hp, we do indeed keep this promise. But the intelligent P3 hybrid concept offers much more. I am sure that with this technology, which incorporates a lot of know-how from Formula 1, we will also appeal to a new group of customers", says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

"With its Performance hybrid drive and electrically assisted exhaust turbocharger, the new C 63 S E PERFORMANCE is a technological masterpiece that takes a new approach. The electrified powertrain offers a whole new driving experience. The immediate response of the electric drive at the rear axle, the rapid torque build-up as well as the fast power output and also draw of our battery are very special features. Add to this the standard-fit rear axle steering and the fully variable all-wheel drive with Drift Mode - the new C 63 once again illustrates the high level of technical expertise that AMG possesses", says Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE is packed with the most technology to date, as you’d expect. The list of features and technologies is ridiculously long, too long to cover in a short article, there’s literally days worth of information and for those that want all the details, check out the Mercedes-AMG site. We just want to know power, performance and price. It is sad that the crackling V8 synonymous with the C 63 nomenclature is gone, but new owners can at least brag about having the most powerful 4-cylinder in production with that 350 kW (476 hp) and 545 Nm output.
