THE F1 EDITION MERCEDES-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE - THE PERFECT ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Point us to someone who professes to be into cars and the automotive industry who doesn’t know the three letters of A, M and G and the associated logo, and we’ll tell you that person doesn’t exist. AMG is synonymous with the Mercedes-Benz brand, it’s the performance side of the company that is able to create its own special edition cars under the Mercedes-AMG banner. AMG has just turned 55 years old, which is a milestone for any company and deserves to be celebrated. There’s no better way for an automaker to do this than create a limited edition car with a few bespoke details that will set it apart from the regular models of the same car - which in the case of AMG is already a rather upmarket and bespoke product.

Just an FYI, AMG is the acronym for Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach and it’s derived from two last names and a location. The brand was created when engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, who worked in the Daimler-Benz Development Department, had to do something different when the company pulled out of motorsports. They carried on what they were doing, but privately from Han’s house that was based in the town of Großaspach on Aspach, Germany. It was here that they did their own development on the engine used in Manfred Schiek’s Mercedes-Benz 300 SE and after the duo went on to win the ten following races, the reputation of their work spread and a legend was born. It was years later when things became all official and AMG was seen as a separate entity, and even later in 1993 when the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG was launched. In January 2005 DaimlerChrysler gained 100% control of the company and the company became as we know it today: Mercedes‑AMG GmbH.

Of course, a special edition needs to live up to that first part and actually be special. In celebration of 55 years of AMG, Mercedes-AMG has released their first performance hybrid in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance and it is now the automaker’s most powerful production model thanks to technology that’s trickled down from their innovations created for the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 cars. The hybrid concept now features an added electric motor and high-performance battery on the rear axle to give the C-Class a combined power output of 620 kW (843 hp).  This F1 Edition is distinguished by non-metallic paintwork called Manufaktur Alpine Grey with foiling for the AMG logo. The paint also shows a colour gradient from grey to black highlighting the red accents. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance rolls on some new forged 21-inch AMG wheels in a black matt finish with red accents inspired by the Official FIA F1 Medical Car from Mercedes-AMG. There’s also an added aero package with a fixed rear wing and a lower diffuser at the rear, while up front we see a larger splitter plus some smaller deflectors. Inside there’s exclusive black Nappa leather with red piping, as well as some red seatbelts and red AMG carbon fibre trim and the final touch is the exclusive Edition badge found in the interior and on specific AMG floor mats. Customers also receive a customised AMG Indoor Car Cover complete with F1 logo. Cool.
