THE NEW MERCEDES-AMG SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE IS A STUNNING 600 KW DROPTOP. BOSS.
Mercedes-AMG has released the new range-topper for the new SL series, the rather freaking stunning SL 63 S E Performance, it has to be one of the best AMG models we’ve seen in 2023. “The SL has always been an icon in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. The latest version of the legendary roadster transfers this status into the future. First and foremost is the new SL 63 S E Performance, which, with its innovative technology, is the most powerful member of the SL family. With this unique concept, we offer our customers not only superior performance but also the option of all-electric driving. Extensive equipment options and the high-quality materials used also make the SL one of the most exclusive roadsters on the market - a real dream car.” says Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes Maybach divisions. That E in the name is something we’re all getting used to these days thanks to the emergence of electric vehicles and electric-assist hybrid setups. When the C 63 AMG S E Performance was released, it had the right power figures for the best of the C Class cars with an impressive 500 kW and 1,020 Nm of torque on tap but AMG purists lost their collective minds because the base for the hybrid powerplant was a turbocharged 4-cylinder. It pretty much lost the soul of the C 63. It seems that Mercedes learned quickly from that mistake, and so this new SL 63 S E Performance went back to the proper AMG roots and instead of that turbocharged four in play, there’s once again a V8 doing the main power supply duty. Rejoice.
The new SL 63 S E Performance features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that receives electric assistance from the Formula 1-derived AMG Electric Drive Unit. With old and new tech working in unison, the new SL has a pretty damn impressive power output of a massive and even 600 kW (816 hp) with a huge maximum system torque rating of up to 1,420 Nm, which as said, makes this the most powerful SL of all time. The gasoline-fed side of the equation is rated at 450 kW with 850 Nm, and the electric side is rated at 150 kW and 320 Nm - pretty much what my Mk4 GTi makes, which is just nuts. On the transmission side, there’s that lightning-fast 9-speed AMG Speedshift in play that’s mated to the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive setup. As you can imagine, traction and handling are brilliant as a result. Helping with the handling is AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation and active rear-axle steering. Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction (up to 100 km/h) or in the same direction (faster than 100 km/h) as the front wheels. The new SL 63 S E Performance is properly fast, it can get up to the benchmark speed of 100 km/h in as little as 2.9 seconds. If you have the space and are sure Metro isn’t aiming cameras down the highway, you can hoof it all the way to a nice and fast 317 km/h. Behind the 20-inch (or 21-inch optional) wheels, you’ll see the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system that sees large 420 x 40 mm floating discs up front with bronze-coloured 6-pot calipers, and 380 x 32 mm at the rear. My front brakes are decent, and they’re 320 mm. Local pricing isn’t available yet, but the lil’ brother Mercedes-AMG SL 43 starts at R2,477,300, which incidentally makes it the most expensive 4-cylinder car in SA, and probably the world. So this SL 63 S E Performance will surely be closer to R4mil. It starts at $183,000 and without any taxes and stuff above our pay grade, that directly translates to R349,3817.28.
Take a look at the YouTube video that shows off one of the sexiest SLs ever created, and the fact that it has 600 kW on tap makes it the most powerful to date, which is pretty much the way things should go when you bring out a new model.
