WHAT KILLED THE TUNER CAR SCENE? - WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW
The tuner car scene was at its peak in the late 1990s and early 2000s with car enthusiasts spending every last penny on tricking out their ride to the absolute extreme! Every car feature and show presented cars that were modified from the ground up from performance right through to customising every last panel in the interior and for the most part, the tuner car scene was responsible for the inspiration of the Fast and Furious movie franchise as well as what car culture evolved into today...
However, during the peak of this era, a few things happened: the first major event was the increase in popularity of the internet where more and more digital/online car magazines came available on the market that had the capacity of releasing event features weeks ahead of the top printed magazines at the time which drove advertisers away from the time local publications as a lot of these digital magazines were international and the average viewership would only receive adverts of car mods that were not necessarily available in the hub of tuner car culture, California US.
Secondly, the worst disaster the United States experienced in decades happened, that of 9/11. As a result, car enthusiasts were reluctant to import car parts and as a whole, spend money on unnecessary hobbies like car modifications, and as minor as that might have seemed on a global scale, it drastically shifted people's mindsets of what is a wise move financially.
This all had a major impact on the tuner car scene in California.
