WHEN A MISTAKE BECOMES A STORY: HOW A NUMBERING SLIP TURNED TWO PORSCHE 911 S/TS INTO LEGENDS.

Sometimes true craftsmanship reveals itself not in perfection, but in how imperfection is handled. In the case of the Porsche 911 S/T, a simple numerical error has become a rare and rather wonderful footnote in the brand’s history - one that may well add unexpected lustre to two already coveted collector cars. Built to celebrate 60 years of the iconic 911, the 911 S/T was conceived as a purist’s machine. Limited to just 1,963 examples worldwide, each car carries a personalised numbered plaque on the passenger-side dashboard. As deliveries of the final cars began, Porsche discovered that something unusual had happened: the limited-edition number 1724 had been assigned twice.

One 911 S/T bearing the number found its way to Pedro Solís Klussmann in Guatemala, while the other was delivered to Suzan Taher on the opposite side of the world. The duplication was traced back to the highly manual ordering process involved in producing customised interior badges - a reminder that even at Porsche, human hands still play a vital role.

“There is a lot of specialised manual work involved in manufacturing, and human involvement means that mistakes can happen,” explains Karl-Heinz Volz, Director of Sonderwunsch at Porsche. “The important thing is how you deal with them. It was very important to us to apologise to our customers appropriately and to correct the error.”

For Pedro Solís Klussmann, President of Porsche Club Guatemala, the number 1724 wasn’t just a random choice. It carried deep personal meaning: the 17th marks the birthdays of his mother, grandmother and himself, while 24 refers to his father’s birthday. Suzan Taher’s car, by contrast, was originally intended to wear the number 1742 - a figure with no particular emotional connection. Rather than quietly correcting the mistake, Porsche leaned into the moment. Both owners were invited to Zuffenhausen for a special occasion, where the brand formally acknowledged the mix-up. To commemorate their shared numerical anomaly, Porsche presented them with a framed image of both cars wearing their correct limited-edition numbers, along with an elegant presentation box containing samples of each car’s interior and exterior materials. The incorrectly installed plaque didn’t disappear into a drawer either. In a wonderfully Porsche move, it was officially handed over to Frank Jung, Head of the Porsche Archive, catalogued and stored as part of the company’s documented history - transforming an error into a permanent anecdote within the Sonderwunsch story.

Aside from their brief moment of shared identity, the two 911 S/Ts could hardly be more different. Solís Klussmann’s car is finished in Shore Blue Metallic and features the Heritage Design package from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. Inside, Classic Cognac fabric seat centres with black pinstripes provide a clear nod to Porsche’s past, while a carbon-fibre roll cage underlines the car’s custom build.

Suzan Taher’s 911 S/T, meanwhile, is finished in the striking Paint to Sample Plus colour Rose Red – a shade first known as “Fraise” in the 1970s and famously worn by cars such as the Carrera RS 2.7 and the 911 Carrera RSR 3.0 that competed in the 1974 IROC series. The colour proved so compelling that, following its application to this Sonderwunsch build, it will officially join Porsche’s Paint to Sample catalogue from the 2026 model year. Inside, extensive Guards Red leather adds further drama to an already bold specification.

What began as a minor production slip has instead become a moment of transparency, craftsmanship and storytelling - and in the collector car world, stories matter. For two owners, their 911 S/Ts now carry not just a number, but a unique chapter in Porsche history.
