50 JAHRE GOLF WITH THE VW CLUB OF SA

The Volkswagen Golf was born as the successor to the iconic Beetle - a car that amassed an almost mythical status with over 21.5 million sales globally. To say the Golf had a tough act to follow is an understatement. Yet, not only did it rise to the occasion, but it also cemented itself as a global favourite, with over 37 million units sold in its 50-year history. For many, particularly those over 40, the Golf is more than just a car; it’s a chapter in their personal story. Here in South Africa, that nostalgia extends across generations, thanks to the Mk1 Golf’s incredible production run that only ended in 2009. This longevity means countless South Africans learned to drive in a Mk1, with many cherishing it as their first car. Even today, the Mk1 remains a cult classic - its affordability and versatility drawing in both students and motorsport enthusiasts alike. The beauty of Volkswagen engineering is its modularity, allowing parts from newer models to be retrofitted onto older generations. This characteristic has kept the Mk1 alive and thriving, not just as a daily driver but as a canvas for enthusiasts. This sentiment isn’t exclusive to the Mk1 either; the Mk2 and Mk3 continue to inspire, despite their more traditional production lifespans. Wonder through any car meet or shop and you’ll spot examples ranging from pristinely preserved originals to wild, heavily modified show cars. The Mk4, on the other hand, marked a turning point for the Golf, introducing a more refined, upmarket vibe with improved engines and luxurious interiors. Now more affordable, the Mk4 is seeing a resurgence among those who longed for one in its heyday but couldn’t swing the price tag - myself included.

I’ve had my fair share of Mk1 Golfs over the years, but the Mk4 always held a special place in my heart. Two years ago, I finally snagged a dream car: a late-model 2004 Mk4 GTI. Now over two decades old, the car still feels solid and well-built - a testament to Volkswagen’s attention to quality. The leather seats are intact, the Climatronic aircon works perfectly, and every feature, from the power windows to the central locking, functions like clockwork. With just over 250,000 km on the odometer and a few choice mods boosting the power from 132 kW at the crank to around 150 kW at the wheels, it still gives more smiles per mile than anything else I’ve ever owned. That’s some serious longevity. In my world, Volkswagen isn’t just a brand; it’s practically a lifestyle. From friends to acquaintances, nearly everyone has owned one - or still does. Scroll through my social feeds, and you’ll find everything from immaculate Mk1 showpieces to tastefully tuned Mk8s. The Golf has woven itself into the fabric of my life, and I could easily fill days recounting stories about these cars. To honor the Golf’s 50th anniversary, the Volkswagen Club of South Africa recently put together an event at VW Benoni Citi. They assembled every generation of Golf for a park-off and photo shoot, and the turnout was great, matching the vibe. There were some prime examples of well-looked after OEM Golfs along with a host of tastefully modified ones making for some proper eye candy and photo opportunities. I couldn’t stay for the whole event thanks to previous commitments, but below is a gallery of what was seen while I was there. I just wanna send a huge thanks to the VWCSA committee for putting this event together, y’all absolutely rock. Everyone who confirmed attendance also received a framed certificate as a reminder of the epic day with fellow VW fanatics.
