Just how easy is it to steal your information just from a number plate?

We have seen it time and time again that people, especially when posting pics of their cars on social media, block out their number plates, either by completely removing them or editing them out with the help of Photoshop. But why do we do it? Is it because we don't want people to recognise the exact car in public? That surely cannot be the case as, with the car modification game, you try and make your car look as unique as possible, so a number plate blacked out might not really do what you want it to do.

But maybe it is for another reason, like protecting your identity and information. But, are these people just paranoid or do they have a valid point?

There are a number of reasons why you would maybe want to look up someones licence plate, or just simply keep a record of it. Let's say you witnessed a hit and run, if you had a photograph of that person's number plate, you could track them down with the help of the police. Or maybe you could use it to identify the true age of the car.
