IDLE DRIVE 2 UNITE CHARITY CAR & BIKE RUN 2025
This past weekend, there were some cool motoring events on, but the most impressive was the idle DRIVE 2 UNITE, SA’s largest car and bike charity run. This unforgettable event aimed to bring car and bike enthusiasts together for a purpose-driven parade around Johannesburg on the national highway, ending in an exclusive vehicle showcase at Montecasino. The best part is that it was all free to the public. Curated by the idle Events team, Drive 2 Unite is a powerful movement supporting Blessing Lives, an NPO focused on breaking the silence around period poverty and supporting schoolgirls in underprivileged communities. The event kicked off early on the morning of Sunday 22 June at Ferndale on Republic, and hundreds of supporters turned out to join the fun, show off their cars and earn their wings by supporting an amazing initiative. Entry was free, but everyone was encouraged to bring along at least one pack of sanitary pads to contribute to the Sanitary Pad Drive - and thousands were collected. Car people rock. From the initial meeting point, over 200 cars hit the highway for a lap of Jozi, and everyone knew it thanks to Metro coming on board and literally shutting down the highway for all the cars to be able to bunch up in an amazing convoy, which even included a truck horse. After the spectacular lap, all the cars headed to Montecasino for a massive park off for a few hours in the same space that the annual idle Auto Fest is hosted. This gave the public and loads of content creators time to snap some pics of the massive lineup of tasty cars that ranged from classics like a Lotus Esprit through to modern weapons like a Porsche GT3 RS.
We didn’t manage to get to the Montecasino hook-up due to a previous booking, but we did manage to get to the initial meeting point for the registration and arrival of the cars. This was probably the best way to get some great pics because there were equal amounts of cars and people, and that made for clean shots. We unfortunately missed loads of cars, but we managed to capture quite a few of the interesting ones in some great soft morning light. The variety and quality of cars were next-level, and if that’s any indication of the upcoming idle Auto Fest on the weekend of 1-3 August, it will be a show not to miss. If you haven’t heard by now, the event will feature an international guest that everyone should recognise, and if you don’t, then you’re on the wrong website. Noel G will be here to check out the local car scene, and his feedback will be interesting. Don’t recognise that name? Maybe you’ll know his as Hector from the Fast & the Furious franchise. There’s no word on if he’s bringing three Spoon engines with him yet, though.
As usual, the local motoring community came out in impressive numbers for a brilliant cause. If you missed this one, make sure to keep an eye on the idle Auto Fest page for when more events like this pop up, and whatever you do, make sure to get to the actual idle Auto Fest show in a few month’s time. We’ll see ya there!
