IS THE 1:8-SCALE MCLAREN SENNA IN SENNA SEMPRE LIVERY BY AMALGAM THE BEST MODEL EVER CREATED?

Scale model cars are a passion for many. They give motoring fanatics a way to own special cars that most of us can only dream of driving. They’re also great aspirational things, there are many who will shell out good money on one single model that will be put on display somewhere in the house and it will serve as inspiration to work hard and hustle so buy the full-scale drivable version. Modern Scale model cars are amazing in comparison to those of years gone by. Advances in manufacturing processes and materials mean more accurate models can be created with astounding details. In the 1920s and 1930s, the first models were handcrafted from wood or metal, and soon tinplate models took off, especially in Germany and Japan. The post-war era signalled a boom in die-cast models and companies we know well now started their rise, like Dinky Toys, Corgi, and a firm favourite today, Matchbox. By the 1960s, plastic models became popular until arguably the most well-known brand was launched in the 70s - Hot Wheels. By the 90s, we saw brands like Tamiya, Minichamps, and Autoart arrive with highly detailed offerings. Out of all these new-age brands, there is one that rules above all others, and it goes by the name of Amalgam. They produce large 1:8 models as well as the industry standard of 1:18. This quality doesn’t come cheap though, prices are more than decent low-mileage 2nd hand sportscars. Buying two from a set can cost as much as a duplex in Fourways. Amalgam is the Rolls-Royce of model cars.

Our previous favourites from Amalgam include the 1:8 Ferrari Ferrari 499P listed for around R375,000 and the Ferrari 12Cilindri Coupe at R443,000 - and we don’t even like Ferrari. There’s a new favourite from Amalgam that’s just been released and it rocked right to the top of the list of the coolest model cars ever created. It’s a 1:8 replica of the hand-painted McLaren Senna in that sublime Senna Sempre Livery. The model is limited to just 30 units, but two are already spoken for. #1/30 is reserved for McLaren Automotive who will no doubt display it at their Woking headquarters, although it might end up in a cabinet in Zak Brown’s office. #30/30 is destined to be given to the Senna family, for obvious reasons. While this model is also an expensive offering at $25,510.00 (roughly R463,000), thanks to its release coinciding with the release of Netflix’s Senna docuseries, there should be more than enough wealthy fanatics willing to add one to their collections. The McLaren Senna Sempre is the result of more than 3,000 hours of development with 300 hours of assembly time. Like all the amazing models that Amalgam created, it was done so using McLaren’s original CAD designs and paint codes. The Senna Sempre includes the same vibrant colours inspired by Ayrton’s iconic racing helmet, alongside the subtle inclusion of symbolic numbers from his career. The hands-down coolest detail is the Ayrton Senna quote inscribed in the cockpit that reads: "I have no idols. I admire work, dedication and competence".

Take a look at the YouTube video of what could be the best 1:8 scale model we've ever seen, and it makes sense that it comes from the masters at Amalgam. The details are so intricate that you could easily shoot the car with a macro lens and no one would know it wasn't a lifestyle version: Handling Your Model: McLaren Senna in Senna Sempre Livery at 1:8 scale | Amalgam Collection
