ORACLE RED BULL RACING REVEALS THE RB20 FORMULA ONE CAR - WILL IT BE AS GOOD AS THE RECORD-SETTING RB19?
We’ve been treated to a bunch of reveals of the cars entered into this year’s Formula One race season. The McLaren, the Aston Martin and the Ferrari have all been seen now, but the most anticipated one has undoubtedly been that of the Oracle Red Bull Racing team. Here at SXdrv, we’ve also been waiting patiently for this one. It’s not really that we’re Max or Checo fans, it’s because the Red Bull-sponsored team is the most active one there is. Under the Red Bull banner, the amount of events and activations is second to none. In between races when the drivers have downtime, the content creators behind the brand keep the drivers busy with all manner of amazing things, like trying their hand at other racing disciplines and driving weird and wonderful cars in strange places - among many other things that keep the legions of fans happy. The Red Bull media machine is the best on the planet, which makes sense when you have one of the biggest budgets there is in the sport, well, all sports. After the other big players revealed their cars, we knew it was only a matter of time before we’d see what the RB team had planned for its launch. So yeah, last night Oracle Red Bull Racing revealed the RB20, the car that will be used for the 2024 Formula One season, and there are millions of fans around the world who hope the car will be as good as the record-setting RB19 from last year. At a typically massive Red Bull event in Milton Keynes in the UK, the covers were taken off the new RB20 car that the duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will campaign over 24 races in 2024. The full team was in attendance along with the world’s most important motoring media. The car looks as impressive as the past cars, retaining the iconic navy blue base colour with all this year’s sponsor logos standing out in their own usual colours. There are some changes to the setup over the RB19 car, although all the technical details are still quite secretive until the car is put through its paces at the Bahrain test sessions coming up on the 21-23 February.
The new RB20 car, and the drivers, have a massive job ahead of them if they want to improve on the astounding stats from last year in the RB19. With that car, the race team set the bar by winning 21 of the 22 races with 19 of those wins taken by Max Verstappen to win the 2013 driver’s championship. As a constructor, Oracle Red Bull Racing was untouchable with a total of 451 points over the second-place team of Mercedes. If the recipe on the RB 20 is right, the team could possibly better the 2023 results, but that would mean the team has to win at least 22 of the 24 races - and that will only come with hard work and some serious focus. The drivers have had a session in the car already at the Silverstone test session, but the weather wasn’t great and the full potential of the cars couldn’t be exploited. “Unfortunately it was quite wet so you’re only driving on rain tyres, but everything was working very well and I think that’s always great. You drive out of the box and there are no problems and you just do what you have to do before you get to Bahrain,” said Verstappen. On the car itself, he went on to say: “It does look a bit different. I think the team definitely pushed on quite a bit from last year and I think that’s very positive. I’m just looking forward to get to Bahrain, start testing and really see what the car is capable of.” On teammate Perez’s side, he said: “You can see that the team has done an incredible job, we’ve gone very aggressive with the concept, so I’m looking forward to it… I find it great from Red Bull that we’ve had such a dominant car last year, that we just changed completely our concept. It’s something that I think requires a lot of hunger in the team, to keep pushing all the boundaries. Will be interesting to see how everything feels on track.” The only specs out on the car so far are that it retains a 1,600 cc V6 with a 15,000 RPM limit and a healthy 900 hp (671 kW). Bring on Bahrain!
