PORSCHE PREPARES TO UNLEASH NEXT-GEN 911 CUP RACER IN 2026 - DAMN THAT CAMO WRAP!
After months of intense development and track testing, Porsche Motorsport is almost ready to lift the covers on its next one-make racing weapon - the new Porsche 911 Cup car, based on the recently updated 992.2-generation 911. This latest iteration is set to make its global debut in mid-2025 and will hit the grid in anger starting with the 2026 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and select Carrera Cup championships around the world. Since its debut in 1990, the 911 Cup has become the cornerstone of Porsche’s one-make racing empire. What started as a national racing series in Germany quickly evolved into an international phenomenon when the Porsche Supercup joined the Formula 1 support calendar just three years later. Fast-forward to today, and the 911 Cup formula has gone truly global, with Carrera Cups running across more than a dozen countries, from Japan, Australia and the Middle East to Europe, North and South America. Add to that 23 Porsche Sprint and Endurance Challenges and Trophies, and it’s clear - the 911 GT3 Cup is more than a race car; it’s the beating heart of grassroots GT racing around the world.
And it’s not just popularity - it’s production numbers too. Porsche has built an impressive 5,381 units of 911-based one-make cup cars, making it one of the most produced racing cars on the planet. The current model, introduced for the 2021 season, alone accounts for 1,130 examples, all assembled at the same Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen facility that produces the road-going 911. Fun fact: each GT3 Cup car rolls off the line in just under eight hours.
The upcoming model continues this lineage with a focus on evolutionary refinement. Development kicked off in January 2024 at Porsche Motorsport’s headquarters in Weissach, and the goal was clear - retain the DNA that makes the GT3 Cup such a potent and accessible race car, while levelling up performance, durability, and driveability across the board.
“The current 911 GT3 Cup already operates at a very high-performance level,” says Jan Feldmann, Project Manager for Porsche’s GT racing cars. “That gave us the opportunity to focus more closely on driver and team feedback from our global one-make series. As a result, the new Cup car is refined in nearly every area.”
Among the most noticeable changes are the redesigned front-end aerodynamics, which improve overall handling and driver confidence. But the changes go far deeper than aero. Engineers have also enhanced electronic systems, brake feel, power delivery, gearbox and drivetrain performance, and - as always - the sound and fury of that naturally aspirated flat-six. Michelin returns as tyre supplier, continuing a longstanding partnership. While it shares DNA with its predecessor, this new Cup car takes a significant step forward thanks to extensive real-world testing. Porsche took its pre-production prototypes to the limit on legendary circuits including Monza, Lausitzring, and the Weissach test track. Wheel time was shared by an elite group of Porsche racing talent:
Bastian Buus - 2023 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup champion
Klaus Bachler - 2024 FIA Endurance Trophy LMGT3 winner
Laurin Heinrich - 2024 IMSA GTD Pro champ
Marco Seefried - Veteran with serious endurance pedigree
In keeping with Porsche’s push for sustainable performance, the development process ran exclusively on eFuel - the same fuel blend used in the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. This fuel isn’t just a placeholder for the future - it meets the FIA’s new “Advanced Sustainable” fuel regulations and is designed for real-world racing.
