THE 1,000 HP+ MERCEDES-AMG ONE SMASHES ITS OWN NüRBURGRING LAP RECORD
The Mercedes-AMG ONE is a force to be reckoned with, and since October 2022, it's been the undisputed champion at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, holding the record as the fastest production car on the planet. But if there’s one thing AMG knows, it’s that records are meant to be broken—even if it’s your own. And that’s exactly what DTM driver and AMG ambassador Maro Engel did, smashing his previous lap time by more than five seconds. With an officially clocked and certified time of 6:29.090 over the iconic 20.832 km track, the AMG ONE has once again redefined what it means to be fast. This new record doesn’t just beat the six-minute-and-30-second barrier - it obliterates it, making the AMG ONE the first road car in history to conquer the Nürburgring in under 6:30. Oh, and it’s still the only series-production hybrid hypercar to tackle the world’s most demanding racetrack. In other words, it’s not just a record-holder - it’s in a league of its own. “We’ve held this record for nearly two years, but at AMG, standing still just isn’t in our DNA,” said Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes‑AMG GmbH. “We’re constantly pushing the limits of what’s possible, and this latest lap is proof of that. The team’s relentless commitment has been rewarded, and I’m incredibly proud of this effort. Once again, we’ve shown the world what AMG stands for.” The AMG ONE is no ordinary hypercar - it’s a Formula 1™ car in road-legal clothing. Its 782 kW (1,063 hp) powerplant combines a turbocharged combustion engine with four electric motors, and yet, even with that monster setup, meticulous preparation was key to setting a new record. The stars aligned on September 23, 2024, when Engel clocked his fastest time on his third lap at precisely 6:56 p.m. Perfect track conditions - a cool 15°C air temperature and 20°C asphalt - helped lay the groundwork for this achievement. But even with perfect grip and an ideal setup, it wasn’t just about brute speed; Engel had to masterfully manage the car’s hybrid power, just like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell do on Formula 1™ weekends.
At over 20 kilometres long, the Nordschleife requires precise energy management, particularly when it comes to harnessing and recovering electrical energy during braking phases. Every ounce of power had to be squeezed from the batteries to take advantage of the AMG ONE’s incredible 352 km/h top speed - a crucial edge on the track’s long straightaways. The car was set to Race Plus mode, which means maxing out its already aggressive aerodynamics, dialling in a tight chassis, and lowering the vehicle by 37 mm at the front and 30 mm at the rear for optimal downforce. And when Engel needed that extra bit of speed, he hit the DRS button on the steering wheel to retract the front louvres and flatten the two-stage rear wing, slashing drag and boosting straight-line speed. All of this performance was grounded by a set of specially developed MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tyres, fitted as standard, along with the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brakes, delivering the stopping power needed to navigate the infamous corners of the Nürburgring. With this achievement, the Mercedes-AMG ONE has once again proven that it’s not just faster than the competition - it’s in a class of its own, continuing to push the envelope of what a hypercar can be. Maro Engel, the man behind the wheel for this incredible lap, was no stranger to the challenge. “Two years ago, the track wasn’t ideal - some sections were still damp. We knew we had more in us, and today we proved that. It’s an honour to drive such a unique machine, and I’m grateful to the team for their trust in me,” he said.
