THE HISTORY OF THE VW HARLEQUIN

Volkswagen is one of those brands that can afford to take a serious risk on creating some limited edition runs that might or might not be a hit at all, but luckily for them, their multicoloured 1995 VW Polo Harlequin was one of the best selling limited edition car runs of all time, but the trend didn't last long...

Back in the 1950s, VW launched a print ad that showcased their impressive stock on parts for the VW Beetle that featured a Beetle in multiple different colours. It wasn't until 1995 that the then CEO of VW Ferdinand Piech stumbled upon that vintage Beetle ad and decided to do a limited edition run of the 1995 VW Polo that would feature different colours on every panel. VW produced 20 samples of the VW Polo Harlequin but it was such a hit with the public that VW decided to make a further 1000 units that sold out instantly.

Soon thereafter, VW made a run of the Harlequin style on the VW Gold MK III but surprisingly, they struggled to sell them, VW had to eventually swap out panels to make cars into one single colour just to cover costs.
