THE ICONIC LAMBO AVENTADOR SV GOES UP AGAINST THE LATEST KOREAN HOT HATCH - THE HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 N

We really like Hyundai IONIQ 5, it has to be the best all-round EV there is so far. Well, for the likes of us anyway. It has a great size, some really good styling and it's stupendously powerful which even gives it supercar-like performance. The IONIQ 5 N ticks more of the important boxes than most of the new EVs and is basically the most modern interpretation of a hot hatch available. The all-electric hatchback is powered by a pair of electric motors, one at each end of the car. At the front, that electric motor is rated at a decent 166 kW which is not bad and more than my modified 1.8T makes, but when you add in the rear motor an extra helping of horses gets added in - a whopping 282 kW. The motors work in tandem which means the IONIQ 5 N has a total of 448 kW available. The IONIQ 5 N has an extra trick up its sleeve with a specific drive mode called N Grin Boost which when activated shifts the total power up to an even more amazing 478 kW. People can complain about EVs as much as they want, but there’s no denying just how fast and powerful they can be. There are those that say EVs have no soul because they don’t have the same kind of mechanics, but when you’re sitting five car lengths ahead of an Audi R8 that’s redlining 10 cylinders you’ll wonder what the heck they’re talking about. Beating a supercar is good for the soul, no matter what you drive. I mean the most powerful turbocharged hot hatch we’ve seen to date is the Mercedes-AMG A45S with a turbocharged 2-litre 4-cylinder that has 310 kW on tap. We’ve seen videos of the IONIQ 5 N cars embarrassing many bigger and more expensive cars, we’ve seen a regular production version complete Pikes Peak in less than 11 minutes, we’ve seen Misha Charoudin pass anything and everything around Nurburgring and now we get to see what happens when Mat Watson and the Carwow crew mess around with one on a drag strip.

Besides being named after a vent and a door, the Lamborghini Aventador SV (Super Veloce) is an awesome piece of Italian kit. It’s a masterclass in automotive engineering and aesthetics, the SV version features a more aggressive front splitter, a larger rear diffuser, and a prominent rear wing. There’s extensive use of carbon fibre in the body panels, interior, and even the monocoque chassis significantly reduces the car's weight, contributing to its enhanced performance. The Aventador SV tips the scales at 1,525 kilograms, making it a full 700 kg lighter than the rival in this Carwow match-up. At the heart of the Aventador SV lies a naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine, which is the true star of the show. This powerplant is a masterpiece of engineering, delivering a staggering 552 kW of power at 8,400 rpm and a massive 690 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. The supercar can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of over 350 km/h. The engine is paired with Lamborghini's seven-speed Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) automated manual transmission, which provides lightning-fast gear changes and allows the driver to fully exploit the engine's capabilities. The ISR transmission is known for its aggressive shifts, adding to the car's visceral driving experience. The Aventador SV is also equipped with a sophisticated suspension system that ensures exceptional handling and ride quality. The car features a pushrod suspension setup with magnetorheological dampers, which can adjust the damping force in real time based on driving conditions and driver inputs. The cabin is adorned with high-quality materials such as Alcantara, carbon fibre, and leather, all meticulously crafted to create an atmosphere of sophistication while being capable of keeping you comfortable and safe above 250 km/h. Just Aventador SV 600 units were ever made, making it a highly sought-after collector's item. It really is one of those Lamborghinis that will stand the test of time, but how does its performance stack up against the coolest Hyundau hot hatch to date?

Take a look at the YouTube video from the Carwow crew that shows off just how good modern technology in the form of an EV hatchback is compared to a 9-year-old Italian supercar: Lambo Aventador SV v Hyundai IONIQ 5 N: DRAG RACE | carwow
