THE LAST AIR-COOLED PORSCHE TO LEAVE STUTTGART IS THIS 1998 PORSCHE 911 TYPE 993 TURBO COUPé - IT'S FOR SALE, TOO.

In the world of Porsche enthusiasts, some cars are more legendary than others. Few hold the weight of history like the one known as "The Last Waltz." This Ocean Blue 1998 Porsche 911 Turbo, with chassis number 370750, rolled off the Zuffenhausen assembly line on March 27th, just days before production of the iconic air-cooled 911 came to an end. The final car off the line was a Mexico Blue Carrera 4S, sold to comedian and Porsche aficionado Jerry Seinfeld. While Seinfeld’s car might have been the last built, chassis number 370750 was the one that truly marked the end of an era. Ordered in 1997 by esteemed German author Clauss Vanderborg, this 911 Turbo wasn’t just any car. It spent nearly six months in the Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) department - now known as Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur - undergoing extensive customization. Its completion date, March 27th, 1998, coincides with the day Ferry Porsche passed away at the age of 88. Vanderborg, understood to have been a friend of Ferry’s, dedicated this car to the company’s founder, making it a rolling tribute to the man who shaped the Porsche legacy. Even before its time in the Sonderwunsch department, Vanderborg’s Turbo was something special. The car came equipped with a 'WLS 2' uprated M64.60 engine, pushing 330 kW, the same power as the Turbo S of the era. Vanderborg's extensive options list included a strut brace, twin-pipe exhausts, an additional oil cooler, and a 92-litre fuel tank. The wheels and Brembo brake calipers were finished to match the stunning Ocean Blue exterior. Inside, the personalization continued. The entire cabin was swathed in Night Blue leather, covering everything from the switches to the door latches, heater controls, and even the instrument bezels. The dials were finished in a complementary shade, creating a breathtaking, cohesive look that remains in near-perfect condition today. Vanderborg opted to delete the in-car telephone and rear wiper, focusing instead on the car's purity.

A metal plaque affixed to the dashboard reads, “In memoriam Prof Ferry Porsche,” accompanied by a quote from the 1944 German film Die Feuerzangenbowle (The Fire-tongs Bowl): "Only the memories we carry with us are real, the dreams we spin and the desires that drive us true. But with that, we can be satisfied." The car also features sill covers inscribed with 'The Last Waltz,' a motif echoed in a rear window sticker. Vanderborg took delivery of his unique Turbo, the final Type 993 to leave the factory during the air-cooled era, on September 5th, 1998, from Porsche Centre Altötting. Though Porsche would later build the 'Project Gold' 993 Turbo from OEM parts for a charity auction, it was never road-registered, cementing 'The Last Waltz' as the last true customer car of the air-cooled lineage. To mark this historic moment, Altötting fitted a secondary plaque in the door reveal, which reads: “Clauss Vanderborg today received the last classic Porsche 911 (993 Turbo) with an air-cooled Boxer engine. The beat is yours forever!” Additionally, the car comes with a letter from Porsche confirming its status as the final air-cooled 911 to leave the factory. Less than a year later, Vanderborg parted with the Porsche, which then made its way to Japan, where it remained for the next 16 years. In 2015, 'The Last Waltz' was acquired by Belgian dealers Nijsmans Classic Cars, who showcased the Porsche across Europe for two years before passing it to its next owner in the UK. Today, this extraordinary piece of automotive history belongs to an enthusiast in Belgium, its odometer showing just over 11,000 kilometres. 'The Last Waltz' comes with a valid UK NOVA certificate and a Belgian title, ensuring that no taxes will be due should the car return to the EU, but it is expected to fetch between R16,000,000 and R19,000,000. We’re sure it will fetch that, heck, it may even surpass expectations seeing as 'The Last Waltz' now stands as one of the most collectable Porsches ever created, an awesome end of the air-cooled era. The accompanying pics are perfection, kudos to the photographer who’s not credited in the listing.
