THE LEGENDARY NORDSCHLEIFE HAS ALLEGEDLY BANNED ANY FUTURE LAP RECORDS.

Germany’s infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife racing circuit has become the ultimate test track for the world’s biggest performance cars. Each year, car manufacturers ascend to the track in an effort to put their cars at the top of the lap record board. But as it would appear, that will no longer be the case.

In an announcement from J.F. Musial, one of the producers of the Koenigsegg hypercar film APEX, Musial confirms that the Nurburgring’s management group has decided to ban automotive manufacturers from recording timed laps of the historic race course.

The reason for this is actually quite a valid one, although it still sucks. Earlier this year, an accident at the VLN Endurance Championship saw a Nissan GT-R crash heavily, with it getting airborne and killing a spectator. As an immediate reaction, the track management decided to add a speed limit at the fatal corner, Flugplatz. Now, the management group will allegedly add further restrictions at other high-speed areas.

While this may not affect Honda’s plans to put the Civic Type-R at the top of the front-wheel drive leaderboard, it certainly would curtail Koenigsegg from attempting to lap its One:1 megacar faster than its trio of competitors, the Porsche 918, Ferrari LaFerrari, and McLaren P1. According to Musial, Koenigsegg believes it could achieve over 186 mph at ‘Ring sections such as Tiergarten, that now will be restricted to only 124 mph, which will definitely put a massive damper on trying to achieve a good lap time.

The report admits these restrictions are likely to be reviewed by the end of the year. However for now it would appear timed, lap record runs are out of the question. Sad news for petrolhead around the world indeed.
