THE R5 TURBO 2 TURNS 40 AND THE RETRO-COOL R5 TURBO 3E E-TECH 100% ELECTRIC IS CREATED IN TRIBUTE

Automakers and anniversaries are amazing, this year is a round-number anniversary for loads of iconic nameplates, and in the world of French cars it's the turn of the Renault R5 Turbo II that’s recently turned 40-years-old. To celebrate this milestone the French automaker has been busy putting together a retro-inspired all electric version that’s creation is all about fun and going very sideways while saving the planet. The result is quite amazing and it has all the retro look and feel but with all-new composites and technologies to bring the Renault R5 into the future. While what you see here is a concept car that will likely never see production, we can only hope something that looks like this makes it into production at some point, even in limited numbers.

R5 TURBO 3E E-Tech 100% electric looks like a reimagined old Renault but with modern everything including that fin blade, and the air intakes with retro lines and colours. The new-age setup sees a very healthy 280 kW with a massive 700 Nm of torque coming from a pair of rear-mounted electric motors that make use of  42 kWh batteries, and with power like that heading to the rear wheels you’d expect the car to be able to go sideways - and that’s actually one of the car’s selling points - there’s a drift more and a donut mode, because why not? Even the aerodynamics were specifically redesigned for this job with the addition of bonnet air intakes, air resistance-reducing front bumper, no wing mirrors and a rear diffuser protecting the air outlets - to add to the festivities even the headlights play a glitch art-inspired animation when the car’s slaying tyres.

The cabin is just as cool, there’s a pair of close-fit race-style seats that have the right bolstering in play to keep passengers in the sweet spot when chucking the car around like a red-headed stepchild. There are camera mounting points to record any silliness, and the electric dashboard is a modern version of the old-school classic. Anyone who’s ever seen the OG dash can immediately identify this modernised version. The car is made to hoon, and it’s quite safe because it’s actually a carbon fibre-covered tube frame chassis, underbody, bumpers and all of the surfaces have been redesigned on this show-car and it's 25 cm wider than the OG car.
