VILACA RACING TIME ATTACK 2025 IS UPON US - ARE YOU IN?

Due to popular demand, the Vilaca Racing Time Attack Series is back for a new 2025 season. It’s the 6th year running now, which in itself is an impressive achievement for a privateer-level event. If you’re based in Gauteng and you have a well-sorted car that you like to play with, the Vilaca series of events is pretty much tailor-made for you. Also, if you have a fast/modified/well-sorted car and you haven’t heard of Vilaca Time Attack then you need new friends. While you’re searching motoring groups on Facebook for those new friends, here’s a bit of a low down on the series. It was created by Jono Vilaca of Vilaca Racing, a former Red Bull athlete and a ridiculously talented race driver who used his extensive experience to create a competitive privateer race series. While we all like cars and racing not all of us are ok with putting our pride and joy on a racetrack and risking damage. Things are expensive these days, especially things relating to fast cars that need to be imported or made up from scratch - a usual problem in SA. The time attack format is highly appealing because there is no actual wheel-to-wheel racing, in this series, drivers don’t all line up on a grid as in a regular race and all launch fighting for position before the first corner. In Time Attack, the cars are released in intervals with enough of a gap between the cars that even if they put in a Lando Norris-style lap, they still shouldn’t be fast enough to catch the car ahead during the session. Overtaking isn’t allowed, so there's a very minimal chance of ending up in the boot of your mate’s Mini trying to prove your skills. Cars are classed beforehand in a separate event that doubles as a meet & greet where competitors catch up and check out the upgrades and changes to the cars that may have happened over the end-year break. The classes separate the cars based on spec, modifications and power output. On race day this all changes up as the day progresses, the cars get re-classed according to lap times to even out the field and make the season championship as competitive as possible.

If you head on over to the social media pages for the event, you’ll see an awesome lineup of cars that are regulars in the event. As the series has progressed, we’ve seen some cars evolve from regular street-legal setups into cars into weekend track toys, while some cars have remained as daily drivers that get to stretch their legs on race weekends. Some of the entrants are at every round competing for a class title while a decent number attend as daily drivers when they can’t commit to the full season calendar. There’s a class for everyone out there, so there’s really no excuse not to join in. Unless you’re one of those chaps who’s put thousands into a car’s engine and handling to just stand next to it at park-offs while puffing on hubbly and listening to wherever the latest deep bass banger is. Registration for the 2025 race season recently opened up, and it’s looking to be a good one. Check out the calendar and start making plans, more details on the classes and fees can be found at vilacaracing.com, and that’s where you’ll also register for the series. Keep in mind that one of the rounds that's still to be confirmed may take place in Mozambique, and there's also the possibility of a trip to a coastal track too. How cool!

Take a look at the YouTube video from Round 6 of last year's race season. This one took place at Formula K on the East Rand, a favoured venue for these events because the layout can be changed up in almost infinite ways to keep drivers guessing about the route: Vilaca Racing Round 6 2024 Time Attack | Vilaca Racing
