VOLKSWAGEN CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF POLO WITH THE NEW EDITION 50 — BUT DON’T BLINK OR YOU MIGHT MISS IT

Back in 1975, Volkswagen launched a little hatchback that was meant to slot in just below the Golf - a cheeky compact called the Polo. It was meant to be practical, affordable, and lightweight, but it ended up being much more than that. Over six generations and more than 20 million units later, the Polo has cemented its place as one of the most successful small cars ever built. And now, almost five decades after it first hit the streets, Volkswagen is raising a glass with a new commemorative model: the Polo Edition 50. Now before you get too excited - this isn’t a fire-breathing GTI or a retro-styled throwback dripping with nostalgia. No, this is Volkswagen doing what it does best: turning subtlety into a spec sheet. Still, it's a proper nod to a car that helped define the small car segment for half a century. What makes it special? At a glance, not much. But the Polo Edition 50 is more about polish than performance. Based on the well-specced ‘Style’ trim, the Edition 50 adds a handful of bespoke touches that make it just that little bit more distinctive - assuming you know where to look. Standard fit includes a set of 16-inch ‘Coventry’ alloys (with 17-inch ‘Torosa’ wheels available as an option), dark-tinted rear windows, and a slick 3D ‘50’ badge on the B-pillars to let you know it’s not just another lease special. Inside, there are Edition 50 sill plates, a unique dashboard inlay with more ‘50’ branding, and a matching logo on the lower steering wheel trim - because why not?

But the real draw is the long list of standard kit. You get:

Heated sports seats wrapped in proper upholstery

Multifunction leather steering wheel

Ambient lighting and a black headliner for a premium feel

Pedals in chrome-look

Chrome exterior and interior touches (including switchgear and vents)

Rear-view camera

Park & Comfort Assist Package with Front Assist, Side Assist, Park Assist, Rear Traffic Alert, and proactive occupant protection

Discover Media infotainment with streaming and internet integration

If that’s not enough, an optional Plus package dials up the comfort with:

Panoramic tilting and sliding sunroof

Two-zone climate control with upgraded filtering

Keyless Access with SAFELOCK

Under the bonnet, things are strictly sensible. The Edition 50 is available with a choice of three drivetrain options:

70 kW 1.0-litre TSI manual – the entry-level, from €28,200 (in Germany)

70 kW 1.0 TSI with 7-speed DSG

85 kW 1.0 TSI with 7-speed DSG

No hybrid gimmicks, no overboost, no throwback to the 1.4 TSI Twincharger days (luckily), just solid, efficient small-car power for daily driving duties. Celebrating an icon - quietly. Here's hoping there's another one coming soon, but aimed at performance instead of, well, this.
