WHICH AUDI QUATTRO IS THE FASTEST IN A DRAG RACE? THE RESULTS AREN'T SURPRISING...
While drag racing isn’t the be-all and end-all of motoring performance tests, especially when it comes to the all-wheel drive cars from the Audi stable that are known more for their handling prowess. That said, we don’t care because when someone assembles a contingent of these iconic Audi models spanning different generations of Quattro and puts them all together in a line pointing in the same direction, the racer in us wants to see which one will get to the end of the track first. Looking at the specs of each of the Audis in this lineup you’ll probably pick out a winner before seeing the action, in fact, you may do the same with a quick look at the cars parked side-by-side.
The five sought-after Audis that Mat Watson lined up for this race are made up of the Audi S2 Coupe, the Audi Quattro 20-valve, the Audi RS2 Avant, the Audi Sport Quattro and the most recognisable one, the R34 000 000 (£1 700 000) Audi Quattro S1 E2. You’ve likely seen the car in some form of racing/rally console game, older generation chaps will recall this car from its time in the ultra-competitive, ridiculously fast and legendary Group B rally class of the 80s. From the era when racing was dangerous and sex was safe, a time when Audi’s all-wheel drive Quattro system proved itself in competition. As expected it makes the most power out of the bunch with 500 hp and 480 Nm on tap, and with a light weight of just 1090 kg, this race outcome looks to be pretty easy to guess. The RS2 Avant is rated at 315 hp with 409 Nm, the Sport Quattro features 306 hp with 350 Nm, the S2 Coupe makes 230 hp with 350 Nm and the Quattro 20-valve finishes the lineup with just 220 hp and 309 Nm.
As said, the outcome seems pretty cut and dry, I mean there are few cars that can accelerate as well as that old-school S1 E2, even in this day and age. That said, a lot of it comes down to the driver, the way the car launches and who has the nuts to flat-foot an iconic racecar worth very silly money. All that and gear ratios.
